Mattawa is a town in Grant County, Washington. The population throughout the entire year is estimated to be 2,609 according to the 2000 census. During the height of fruit picking season, the population is said to grow somewhere between 4,500 and 6,500. The majority of work available in Mattawa is construction due to the close by Priest Rapids Dam as well as the Wanapum Dam. Mattawa is home to the fist straw bale library in the United States. The town of Mattawa is so small that their entire police force consists of a police chief and three full time employees. The only school district in the area is the Wahluke School District.
