There are two parts to filing a Homeowners or a Renters claim. The first is to confirm you possessed the objects and then you must substantiate their value. The simplest approach is to take your video camera and a few hours of your time to walk through your home (this includes attic, basement, garage, any outbuildings, etc.) and document on tape ALL of your belongings. If you don't have a video camera, you can always take still photos, which you can label, or make a detailed written list. Record the purchase dates and serial numbers, as well as any receipts you have retained. Appraisals are also important when recording art, jewelry, or collectibles. This may sound like a lot of work, but the headaches it will save you in the event of a loss will make up for it in the end! Keep your inventory safe for easy retrieval in a safety deposit box, which of course, will be stored with your homeowner's insurance policy.
