Keep your home and office safe this Holiday Season!

Help keep your home safe from fires this winter
(ARA) - As the holiday season draws near, so does the United States' peak fire season. The same Yule logs, holiday lights and candles that make our homes feel so warm also pose an elevated fire risk. Follow these steps to help ensure you enjoy a safe holiday season.

Keep an eye on the bird

Did you know Thanksgiving Day has the most home fires each year in the United States? As you prepare your holiday feast, be sure to keep an eye on your oven and stove top, as many home fires begin while cooking is left unattended.

Give space heaters space

Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn. According to the National Fire Incident Reporting System, electric heaters cause more than 14 percent of all home heating-related fires.

Never leave a burning candle unattended

Candles started more than 15,600 home fires in 2005, according to the National Fire Protection Agency. These fires accounted for more than $500,000 in property damage. Use a sturdy, deep candleholder and be sure to keep the flame away from anything flammable. Have spare flashlights on hand to use during a power outage rather than candles, and never leave a candle burning while you sleep.

Keep your Christmas tree well watered

The U.S. Fire Administration estimates more than 33 million American homes include Christmas trees during the holiday season. Whether from poor lighting or being placed too close to a heat source, Christmas trees cause more than 200 fires annually. Tragically, many of these fires occur overnight, increasing the risk of fatalities.

Keep matches and lighters out of reach

Children seem to be naturally fascinated by fire. Be sure to educate your children about the dangers of fire. Always store your matches and lighters out of sight and reach from your children. Remember - no lighter is childproof. Some are merely child-resistant.

Change the batteries on your smoke alarm

Test your smoke alarms once a month. Ensure you have one placed in or outside every bedroom in the house and on each floor of the house. Consider connecting them so they all sound at once should a fire occur.

"A home fire can be such a tragic, devastating thing," says Sue Steen, CEO of Servpro Industries, Inc. "Our Franchisees see it every year. It's easy for us to think it will never happen to us, but the best way to help prevent fires is to be aware of and take steps to mitigate the risks."

Don't let your family be at risk during the holidays.
