Sheppard Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base in Texas. The base is located five miles north of the central business district of Wichita Falls in Wichita County. It is the largest and most diversified training base in Air Education and Training Command. The base is home to the 80th Flying Training Wing, the world's only multi-nationally manned and managed flying training program chartered to produce combat pilots for both USAF and NATO and the 82nd Training Wing, a non-flying unit that conducts all technical training. The base is named in honor of Texas Senator John Morris Sheppard, a supporter of military preparations before WWII. The facility has a total base population of approximately 28,000. This number includes both military and civilian operating personnel. The base is fully contained and maintains an elementary school, a theater, a youth center, a bank, and a base exchange. Some businesses in the area are The Boeing Company, L-3 Vertex Aerospace and Tuffy Smith Corporation. One of the best places to see when visiting the area is the Sheppard Air Force Base Heritage Center which includes artifacts, exhibits and archives.
