Are You Ready for Winter?

It's about time to crank up that heating system but wait a minute! Are you really prepared? If you haven't changed your Furnace Filter, you will probably want to in order to insure you are breathing cleaner air. Not only to you improve your indoor air quality by replacing your hvac filter with a new one, you protect your expensive HVAC system, helping to avoid costly repairs. And if you suffer from allergies, you may want to investigate the purchase of an air purifier. They come in all sizes and shapes but the one we recommend is a whole house system that cost pennies to operate and less than half the cost of comparable systems. We have been selling them for over a decade and have tens of thousands of satisfied customers. Finally, let's not forget that reliable air conditioning unit outside! To help protect the system, we strongly recommend an ac coil cover made specifically for your brand of HVAC system. Ours are made in a little old workshop where they have been made by hand with love for over 40 years. It takes about 3-5 weeks to get one but you will be glad you waited! Order one by clicking on AC Cover ...read more

Are Your Children Protected?

As parents, we strive to protect our children in every way possible. We take them to the doctor when they need immunizations, insure they are fed, get rest and exercise...... virtually everything within our power to insure they have a happy and healthy life.......or do we? Like breathing, we just tend to accept certain things in life. In other instances, there are things we simply do not think about. Take for instance the health of your home. Yes, homes can be healthy but a surprising number of them are not. First of all, in an effort to make our homes more energy efficient, we use double pane windows, extra insulation, caulk and a myriad of things to keep the intrusion of outside air away from the inside. This does result in lowered utility costs, but can also have some damaging effects on our health. When we "seal" ourselves in from the elements, we also envelope our bodies in an environment that may not be so healthy. One way to improve your indoor air is through the use of a quality air filter for your hvac system. This is the least expensive fix in your arsenal for home protection and likely one of the best considerations. When considering quality of your ac filter or furnace filter the first thing to ask is, "How long has it been since I removed and replaced it?" Dirty filters can be the place where dust mites, pollen and other pollutants are trapped. If not routinely replaced, too much "stuff" accumulates in the filter, driving down the efficient removal of pollutants. And the higher the efficiency rating of the filter, the more particulates it traps, necessitating more frequent replacement or, at minimum, cleaning. Though most filters are disposable, you can still remove the filter between replacement cycles by vacuuming each side of the filter to help remove a portion of the trapped particulates. It is also a good idea to replace filters at least every 90 days. And another consideration when replacing your air filter besides the frequency of replacement is the quality of the replacement filter. Not all filters are the same. There are actually ones we consider potentially harmful to our health! Take, for instance, the fiberglass filters offered at the low end of the cost spectrum in most "big box retailers" like Wal-Mart, Target and the like. Fiberglass filters can usually be spotted by their characteristic blue filter material (some of the time they are other colors!). The problem with fiberglass filters is that they are constructed of fiberglass, a form of glass. So when the filters are placed in the hvac system, air passes through them at a rapid rate with a lot of force. Soon after installation, the glass fibers begin to degrade, breaking apart in microscopic particles that go into our indoor air. If you are going to pick up the lower cost alternative, you really should ask yourself the question, "How do you feel about breathing glass?" Clearly the best choice for a filter is a pleated, disposable filter. We will discuss the differences in another article, suffice to say you should look at the MERV rating, an independent rating for the filter industry, before buying a filter. The higher the MERV rating, the more efficient it is at removing pollutants from your indoor air. In our next article, we will talk about other things to consider in making your indoor air and your home healthier.
