How you do judge a good translation from a bad one?

I am often approached by people who speak another language who are looking for work. I will ask if they translate or interpret, or both. This inevitably leads to the question, what’s the difference? Many people assume that any bilingual person can do a good translation. Therefore, often a very complicated, well-written document ends up in the hands of someone with absolutely no translation experience. So what all goes into the process of translating, and how you do judge a good translation from a bad one?

It is often said that translation is an art, and I agree. Think about it for a second. If I were asked to draw a picture of someone, I could certainly produce an image resembling a human being that anyone would recognize as such, but could that compare to the naturalness and fine detail of what a true artist could do?

Translation can be viewed in the same way. It is an intricate and often subjective process that goes far beyond a simplistic word-for-word exchange. A good translation needs to carry the meaning and the tone of the original text, while still remaining culturally sensitive and appropriate to the target audience. Poor translations abound and it is such translations that people tend to remember. There is nothing funny about a bad translation if it negatively affects your company image or product..

So what are the qualities that go into making a “good” translation? It must meet several criteria in order to be considered “good.” The first criterion is rather obvious—it has to be accurate. Examples of where this often fails are mistranslations, missing sentences and bad grammar. This point accentuates the need to use translators with a thorough knowledge of both languages, not merely two years of a high school language. Mistranslations and missing words or sentences can have devastating consequences. Additionally, if a translation is fraught with bad grammar or spelling errors, the reader tends to lose confidence in not only the document, but also the company that produced it.

Clarity is another important factor. A translation has to be easily comprehensible and well written, regardless of how poor the original document may be. Good translations commonly read much better than do the originals. Many writers tend to write in rather long and complicated sentences; this is especially true in legal documents. However, a translation should strive to present all the information and nuance of the source text in a clear and uncluttered fashion whenever possible

Naturalness of the translation is the key factor in helping to prevent a translation from sounding like one. Typically, or at least at my company, after a translation has been proofread for accuracy and completeness, an editor will go through the document and make sure that it reads smoothly and sounds as if it were originally written in the target language.

An easily overlooked component of a good translation is mirroring the mood of the author. In general texts, there may not be a definitive tone, but in editorial and literary documents there always is a clear attitude of the author. For a translation to convey the same feeling to the reader, it must use words and expressions which can transmit a similar spirit. Failure to express this accurately can easily mislead the reader as to the writer’s true feelings and attitudes.

Next, a translation needs to be culturally appropriate for the target audience. References to religious figures, sports or country–specific items may confuse or offend the reader. Such references either need to be excluded in the source document before translation begins, or be culturally readapted into the target language.

Lastly, the audience needs to be taken into consideration. Sometimes this is a broad group of people, but more often, it is a narrow, targeted audience. A text written for a group of scientists needs to be translated at a much higher reading level than would consent forms for newly arrived immigrants. Moreover, if a document is destined for a certain country, it is usually best that the translation be performed by a native translator of that country to ensure that only terms and expressions of that country are used. Metric conversions and spelling changes may need to be made to ensure that the translation is acceptable in the given country. This is just a very brief look at the basics of what goes into a good translation.

Translators Unlimited  provide translation and Interpretation services in more than 200 languages our network includes many specialist translators who all meet our stringent requirements: native in the target language (the language translated into), accredited in one or more professional translation institutions, and qualified according to our own classification system. Language Interpretation

The word interpretation comes from word interpret, the dictionary explanation of the word interpret is “to give or provide the meaning of, explain, explicate”. Interpretation on the other hand has wide variety of meanings; it could mean from explaining the artistic or creative work of another person to – as Sigmund Freud – says could be the knowledge of unconscious activities of mind also know as dream interpretationInterpretation when used with word language means act of facilitating the communication either simultaneously or consecutively, between the user of oral or sign language. Even though it is difficult to calculate the total number of languages spoken all around the world, but  according to one research Ethnologic organization (http://www.ethnologue.com/) lists 6,809 distinct languages to be spoken all over the world.  Also according to one of the studies as of 1997 the Christian bible as whole or in parts has been translated into 2,197 different languages.

Language Interpretation in a professional world stands for facilitating of communication from one language to another languages or languages and the mediator that facilitates this communication is known as interpreter.   Interpreter’s role is not only to convert message or expression from a source language and convey it into an equivalent or close to equivalent target language in a real time, but it is to interpret and convey the every semantic element (tone and register) and every intention and feeling of the message that the source-language speaker is directing to target-language recipients.  It does require lot of attention to detail as the tone and feelings could be interpreted differently in different culture, so the interpreter does not only have to be fluent in both the source and target language, but need to have firm understanding of different cultures as well.

Languages interpreter can be performed in many different ways.  Provided below are few of the common modes of interpretation that are used on regular basis:
  • Consecutive
  • Simultaneous
  • Whispered
  • Relay
  • Liaison

Consecutive Interpretation: Consecutive interpreting – some time also know as ad hoc or face to face interpretation – is a mode of interpretation in which the speech is divided into segments.  The interpreter will listen to few sentences of source-language speaker and then interpret these sentences and then allow source-language speaker to continue.

Simultaneous Interpretation: In simultaneous interpretation, as derived from the name interpreter convey the message in the source language as soon as they can render the message from target language.  Mostly simultaneous interpretation is utilized in the conference where interpreter sits in the booth and inter operates and conveys the message on the microphone which is received by the audience through the head phones.

Whispered Interpretation: Whispered Interpretation is also a form of simultaneous interpretation in which interpreter sits or stands next to small group of target-language audience and interprets as soon as message is rendered from source language.  In whispered interpreting method does not require any equipment, but may be done via a microphone and headphones if the participants prefer.

Relay Interpretation: This is the type of interpretation is used when the source message needs to be translated in multiple target languages.  In this case the source message is translated in one commonly known language and then translated to multiple languages by different interpreters.  This type of interpretation is utilized in meetings where there are audiences who speak different languages.

Liaison Interpretation: Liaison interpretation is the one in which interpreter provides the interpretation in both directions.  Liaison interpretation can either be consecutive or whisper interpretation.  Interpreter might need to take some notes during the liaison interpretation but does not require any more equipment.

As the population of the world is increasingly migrating and traveling the distances and diverse population living in global village and different cultures and languages are coming in contact and different business reaching out to international market the need of interpreters and translators is increasing on regular basis.  According to 2000 US census there are 14,005,410 non-English speaking households in US out of which 3,026,542 of the household are linguistically isolated.  Linguistically Isolated household is one in which no member over the age of 14 speaks only English or speaks non-English language and speak very well English, and the number of such households are rising on regular basis, so the need for an unprejudiced, professional workforce of  translators and interpreters is still rising.
