Makeup 101 for Women Over 40+

Makeup for Women Over 40by Makeup Artist Lisa Johnson - www.lisajohnsonmua.com'Now that I'm over 40, what makeup products should I choose and exactly how do I apply them?'Often that's the question women ask me.  Each week, from late March thru May, I will share makeup tips and product reviews specifically geared for women over 40  ~  Never be afraid to try new products! Week 1: 03.26.10 ~ FoundationThe foundation you use should be appropriate for your skin type and one that matches your underlying skin tone. Water or silicone based foundations are generally best for most mature skin, and depending on the coverage you need, you can either use creams or liquids. A good rule of thumb is the the more coverage you need, you general would go with a cream base with more pigment - and if you have delicate skin that tends to sag a bit, liquids may be your best friend. There also are the mineral foundations that are truly excellent as well, but generally offer less coverage in comparison and take several "coats" of application to cover. If you choose mineral foundation products, look for those that offer MATTE finishes, so there is NO shimmer. (Most all mineral foundations are NOT camera ready or suitable for professional photography uses.)Using a foundation brush or sponge (there are non-latex versions you can find), blend the makeup downward and outward. Be sure to start sheer and blend the makeup down the jaw line so that there is no obvious makeup line. Tinted moisturizers are great for dry or maturing skin because they don't seep into lines and wrinkles and provide light sheer coverage. You can make your own with a favorite non greasy moisturizer mixed in with your favorite foundation. If you have red spots or discolorations - use concealer under a sheer liquid foundation and reapply if needed over. (Concealers - will be discussed in Week 2.) *** Foundation TIP~ to base match your skintone make sure you apply in a line on your jaw area... blend to see if it disappears with coverage - that's the one you want.  You want to see seamless coverage and a perfect match from your face to your neck.  Your decolletage should match as well.  A few of my picks for 2010 to try ~Face Atelier Ultra Foundationis amazing - most every makeup artist I know is always amazed at how this silicone-based foundation glides on and appears flawless on every skin type.  You also have a host of colors, along with Plus and Minus - an ingenious pairing to highlight (Plus) and contour (Minus) with any of their foundation colors you choose!  ~L'Oreal True Matchcompact and liquid foundations can fool any eye and you will find so many flawless shades to truly match your skin!  Another amazing drugstore brand that works like professional brands for less. ~MAC Studio Sculptis a brilliant GEL based foundation that is buildable and dries to a satin finish.  Beautiful! Stay tuned for Week 2 for Concealers.  :)  You can view my website, gallery and find out more about me atwww.lisajohnsonmua.comStep 2: ConcealerFor dark circles, use a concealer that is slightly lighter than your foundation. NOT WHITE or too light, as this gives you the racoon look of decades past. Eve Pearl makes an incredible concealer wheel for every skintone:http://www.evepearl.com/products/Face/Face/Face/Dua_Salmon_Concealer_and_Treatment_Light_Medium.htm  Take special care with the skin under the eye by dabbing gently, as it is very delicate. I highly suggest using a concealer brush made specifically for this purpose - you get spot on coverage and don't tear at or rub your eye area too hard (again Chanel or Lancome make some of the best brushes). For concealing facial discolorations such as freckles, blemishes, or red spots, use a concealer that matches your natural skin tone and blend the edges well.*** Concealer TIP~ Make sure to apply a thin layer of concealer and set with translucent powder to avoid creasing.Step 3: PowderAfter you apply your foundation and concealer, dust a light layer of loose powder over the entire face with a large powder brush. One of my favorits is a colorless loose powder you can find from Cinema Secrets or Camera Ready (found at www.camerareadycosmetics.com). This sets the foundation without making the skin look over-powdered like a sponge or powder puff can. You can use pressed colorless as well, with a brush - but understand that pressed has more oils and binders than loose powder.*** Powder TIP ~wonderful sheer professional powders to try:Step 4: EyeshadowFirst, set the eyelid with a primer of your choice (I like Laura Mercer, Lancome and Face Atelier) and a flesh toned shadow over the entire lid (beige works well, light no shimmer). Then, select a deeper color to shade the crease starting from the outer edge using a windshield wiper motion. Remember, lighter colors bring things forward and highlight and darker colors recede and add depth and shading. Therefore, if you have drooping eyes, shade the area right above the crease of your eyelid where it is drooping making sure to blend the outer edge of the shadow up and out. Practice your application and blend well; the goal is not to have obvious edges of color. If you do have trouble blending, a little tip I have is: dip your eyeshadow brush into your loose or pressed powder and SMUDGE out any obvious lines of shadow with your powder.Step 5: EyelinerI like using powder with an angled liner brush (art stores carry great angled brushes and MAC also has one I like) to line the eyes. It contributes to a softer line that isn't too harsh. Position the brush as close to the lash line as possible starting with the inside of the eye and ending the line with a slight lift of the shadow. This will also lift the eye. Generally, the line along the lower lashes should be thinner and less-intense. To make the eyes look bigger, only line the outer 2/3rds of the lower lash line and blend well.*** CAT EYE TIP~ Try this amazing cat eye from makeup artist Corinna B's instruction video:  http://corinnabsworld.blogspot.com/2010/03/lets-make-cat-eye.html  she's amazing and her cute KIWI accent really seals the deal.  :)  I love her!  She's like having your own personal makeup artist!Step 6: MascaraLashes start to thin over time. To add fullness to the lashes, wiggle in black powder eye shadow into the roots of the lashes using a flat angle brush. Curl lashes and apply mascara beginning as close to the root as possible and wiggling your brush up and out. You can opt to go without mascara on the bottom lashes, which will keep the focus on the top part of the eye (which is what we want). You can also try a brown waterproof on the lower lashes - much less harsh than black.  Please always try to use waterproof and water resistant mascaras for the best NON racoon eyes on the block. If you need extra thickening, you can use a lash primer before using your mascara. Now there are these amazing lash thickening potions you can try - and not to mentionLatisse! a new brow thickening and darkening mascara. Some great products to consider for your limp lashes ~L'oreal Voluminousis amazing! Big Fattyby Urban Decay rocks in ONE coat ~Lancome Hypnose Waterproofis SO dramatic and flawless, my fav!  If you want luxury thenYSL Volume Effet Faux Cilsmascara delivers and also delivers in many COLORS!Step 7: EyebrowsEyebrows also get thinner and loose their color over time. I like to shape the brows using a powder shadow. It looks much more subtle and natural. For darker hair, use a color that is slightly lighter than your hair color. For lighter hair, use a color that is slightly darker than your hair color. Apply the powder color using an angled brush, working in the direction the hair grows. Start in the middle of the brow and work out and up very lightly...if you start at the front of the brow you tend to OVER darken this area. There are great stencils to use as well, just position them correctly.*** Eyebrow TIP ~For parts of the eyebrows that are lacking hair, use a blonde or soft brown pencil to define the shape and then set with the proper color powder. This will help the color adhere to the skin.  ALSO seeEve Pearl's eyebrow tips. Some beautiful brow products to check out: N.Y.C.(yes that one) has a great, inexpensive kit that really works!  I like the taupe kit.  ~ A new WATERPROOF eyebrow gel fromShu Uemurais revolutionary - staying power delux!  ~  and my favorite powder pencil isLancome Le Crayon Poudrewith SO many color choices - it's tried and true each time.  I use it for my own skimpy brows. Step 8: BlushI like using a cream blush on more mature skin because it's more hydrating and it looks more natural. If you do decide to use cream blush, remember to do it before you set your foundation with powder. Once you use powder, you have to continue using powder; otherwise it will not blend well and tend to look BLOTCHY.If you want your cheek color to last longer, you can layer it with a powder cheek color after you have set the cream cheek color with your translucent powder. Start light and sheer and add more....if you apply too much, buff it out with a bit of loose colorless powder. I advise to stay away from too PINK or too RED...corals, peaches BRONZES and roses are kind to use for most over acertain age ;)*** Blush TIP ~Blend the color up towards your temples...this will give a lifting look to the overall face. Remember to blend well using a clean sponge so there are no hard edges.  Again start very sheer - a hint of color is what your aiming for here. TryCorinnaB's brushes- brushes offered by an incredible makeup artist FOR makeup artists!  Watch her cute videos too and you'll be taught some wonderful makeup tricks and hear her amazing Kiwi voice.  ;)Blushes to adore ~ Face Atelier has some of the finest most believable colors EVER!  TryFace Atelier Peach Glaze Ultra Blushit's what the pros love. ~NARS blush - sheer, believable, beautiful colors - try Nico and all the other beautiful blush colors.  ~L'oreal Bare Naturale Blush in Soft Roseis stunning and soft.  Remember to start sheer and blend out from the apples. Step 9: Lipstick and Lip LinerTo keep your lipstick from running into the fine lines you can first apply foundation to your lips and then set it with your translucent powder using a clean sponge. Then, apply the lipstick with a lip brush making sure to stop slightly before the edge of the lips. The darker the lipstick, the OLDER you look...but do NOT use frost or highly shiney glosses. Cream, satins and some with a bit of shimmer work well. Reds, russets, wines, etc in a darker tone are great if they are not MATTE...you need a more sheer cream or gloss to use these well. Don't be afraid of color on your lips.Note: To make lips appear larger, highlight the center of the lips with a shimmer gloss.Important:Good brushes are essential for applying makeup!!Remember to knock the excess powder off the brush before you apply the color to your face.Use the right brushes for the right areas…you will get the job done quicker at a fraction of the time. Make sure to hold the brush downward when washing them to avoid loosening the glue and let them air dry at the edge of the counter over night before using them again. If you take care of your brushes, they will last a very long time. And finally, have fun with makeup!! Everyone can look better with a few key elements and the right tools.__________________________________________________Lisa Johnson is a freelance makeup artist working in Nashville and nationally. ECO FRIENDLY WEDDING DAY IDEAS and TIPS

How to have an eco-friendly wedding day - Green Wedding Day tip and ideas Lisa Johnson :: Brides by Lisa - Makeup Artist www.lisajohnsonmua.com     www.myspace.com/bridesbylisa Do you love the environment, camping in the great outdoors, and protecting the earth's resources? Have a wedding day that celebrates your love for nature.ATTIRE: Comfortable, loose natural clothing. There’s no need for attendants to match- just ask them to wear casual clothing they’re comfortable in. You'll probably want to focus on natural fabrics like cotton and linen. Polyester is very hard on the earth's resources, and other fabrics aren't particularly animal friendly.FLOWERS: Wildflowers or daisies, tied in a loose bunch. The look is that you picked them yourself just before the wedding. You‘ll want to make sure that your flowers are pesticide-free by ordering them from a local supplier or from organicbouquet.comSETTING:In the woods or other beautiful natural setting. Consider parks, nature preserves, or botanical gardens near you. If you two have a favorite spot, its often possible to get a permit from the Parks Department- just be mindful that they may have rules about fires, trash, or amount of people.FAVORS:Give each guest a beautiful flower, the seeds so that they can plant it at home, or make a donation in their name to charity.MENU: Serve organic food and wine, and perhaps a vegetarian or vegetable centered menu. Think lighter fare that will mesh with the beauty of your surroundings. If you're planning a vegetarian or vegan menu, check out this article on vegetarian and vegan weddings.REGISTRY: Register for camping and other outdoors equipment, or register to make a donation to a charity.INVITATIONS: Make sure your invitations are recyclable and printed on recycled paper.SPECIAL TOUCH: Consider planting a tree at the end of your ceremony. You can also make a promise that you will return to plant additional trees at anniversaries or to celebrate the births of children until you have a grove that celebrates your family. ...read more

Second-Time Brides

Here Comes the Bride... Again     You've played the role of bride before, so you think you know the drill. But as you begin drafting your to-do list, you find yourself slipping into unfamiliar territory. Is the taboo against wearing another gown of white just an old wives' tale? What's the protocol for getting children involved in the festivities? Do you really need the array of wedding gifts generally bestowed on first-time brides? Well, you can shelve your worries because according to JoAnn Gregoli, proprietor of the NY/NJ/CT tri-state-area-based Elegant Occasions, Inc., generally-accepted remarriage etiquette says that almost anything goes.    Divorce is common, so our society no longer views remarriage as the curse it did years ago. Gregoli, a member of the Association of Bridal Consultants, says it's your call and you should do what's comfortable for you. For example, while wearing a white gown was once taboo for second weddings, this practice is acceptable today. In fact, Gregoli says older, sophisticated brides can choose among a variety of colors in addition to white. And although encore brides continue to refrain from donning veils which still imply virginity, one can't help but wonder when this, too, will change due to the popularity of living together pre-maritally.    There's also no taboo against who gives an encore bride away at the ceremony. Gregoli says you're free to choose among your father, a child or a friend, or even to walk down the aisle alone.    Because divorce and remarriage often means inheriting new children in addition to any children you might have, "the secret to second-time marriages is the blending of families," says Gregoli. In her work, Gregoli has seen children fulfill different functions at the wedding — from flower girl to ring bearer to giving the bride away. One event that stands out in Gregoli's memory is a wedding where the bride walked down the aisle with all of her children to meet the groom at the altar where he was lined up with all of his children. Allowing kids to participate in the wedding ceremony is a good first step towards making them feel accepted and involved.    Gregoli says the rise of remarriages and interfaith marriages popularized the role of travelling ministers who perform on-site weddings. Couples of the Catholic and Jewish faiths cannot remarry within their church or synagogue, and they may find the civil ceremonies performed by judges a bit too dry for their tastes. So, enlisting a travelling minister is a perfect option for those who want a memorable occasion that recognizes their religious faith.    Another popular trend that Gregoli sees is more creativity and personalization of the ceremony itself the second-time around, with poems, psalms and other activities of special meaning taking center stage.    The "anything goes" theme also applies to the wedding reception and wedding gifts. The location and size of the reception is up to you, as is the choice of registering with a bridal registry. Gregoli says that many mature brides who are independently settled, or are already living together with their intended, skip the registry and instead arrange for guests to make contributions to a favorite charity organization in lieu of wedding gifts.    You've played the role of bride before, so you think you know the drill. WHY HIRE A MAKEUP ARTIST FOR YOUR WEDDING?

Your wedding day is coming up and you are wondering if you should hire a makeup artist. You've found your dream dress and all the shoes and accessories that go with it. You spent months planning your bridesmaids' outfits and all the details concerning the ceremony and reception. Do you really want to spend the extra money to employ a professional makeup artist? Hiring someone to apply your wedding day makeup will help complete your look. You spent a lot of time picking out that dress and your accessories. Makeup artists are trained to not only find colours that look good on you, but to find a look that compliments the style of your dress. If your dress is romantic, for example, you may opt for a softer look. If your dress is modern or unconventional, you'll probably want a makeup style that will fit the same description. Makeup artists also understand how different factors can affect your look such as lighting and how you appear in photographs. How many times have you seen pictures of brides whose makeup didn't look quite right? Maybe they had dark spots under their eyes, or their skin tone looked uneven. Chances are, the person who did their makeup didn't understand how the colours they chose would come out on film. A trained makeup artist takes these factors into account. Professionals also help you save time in the morning. On your wedding day, you may be so excited and emotional that you will be happy to let an expert complete your look. You may also be too nervous to apply your own colours. Also, they use products and techniques that will help your makeup stay fresh and beautiful throughout your special day. There are several advantages to hiring a makeup artist for your wedding day. They will create a polished look that will compliment the style of your dress and your personal taste. Makeup artists understand how things like lighting and photography affect your makeup and will choose products and techniques that will enhance your beauty. Also, they help eliminate stress because you may be too nervous to apply your own makeup. They also use techniques that create a look that will stay fresh the all day and night.
