About the Mad Hatter's leather Shop
These days, my local business is mostly concentrated on alterations and repairs of garments, accessories, horse tack and anything that uses a zipper or needs to be stitched. After having run many leather shops over the years, I now work in my home by appointment.
I make a few high quality products for retail sale and do accept selected custom work but mainly fix the existing product base of leather goods already out in the general public. I really enjoy helping people.

How the Mad hatter Leather Shop Started in Kalamazoo
I have been working with leather for over 35 years now.
I apprenticed with a master leather worker, Benjamin, in Boston in 1971. He was a fantastic teacher. I loved the work throwing myself into learning all I could. After 3 months he landed a contract with a publishing company to write a book on leather tailoring. He shut down his business to do this forcing me to go out on my own.
Leather work was very popular in the 70's. My business grew. I sold at street fairs, wholesaled items to stores and took on custom work. In 1974 my wife and I visited a friend in Kalamazoo. Being from New York City originally and having lived in other big cities I was attracted to the small town atmosphere of Kalamazoo.
We moved into the back of our first store on the East Side until we could find house to live in. There were other store locations in the Old Tom Sawyer's Book Raft and then at 903 S Westnedge.
I left that location back in 1982 preferring to work out my home. I found that being a shop keeper was a financial burden and a distraction to the work. Today I work by appointment only out of my home in Millwood. This way I am able to concentrate on being the best leather tailor I can be as well as have a normal family life.

Leather work
I had a significant rip in my prized leather jacket which the Mad hatter fixed at a reasonable rate and in a timely manner. Craftsmanship was impeccable. I could not tell where the repair had been made. Had the jacket conditioned and treated! Looks like new! Great work man!
