Universal Remotes....

So, you need to get rid of all of the remotes on your coffee table. Simple right? You go to Wally World, pick up that $20.00 universal remote off the rack, bring it home, and enter in all the little codes. Done! Not done….

Let's look at the flaws in this plan. When you had a very simple setup, a TV and a cable box, this worked great! Everything is right in front of you and this allows you to shut the TV on and off and control its volume. The problem is unfortunately, hardly any system is that simple these days. You have a flat panel TV, a DVD or bluray player, a cable or satellite box, a surround sound receiver producing your sound, and numerous game systems! You can't keep all these remotes wrangled into one location, never mind keeping them all straight in your mind. That universal remote from one of those department stores? Well, you may be able to get everything programmed into it, but you're actually going to have more button confusing button presses to make to go from watching cable TV to watching a movie. On average there are eight to fourteen (or more!) steps involved in getting that remote to make that simple switch.

What about the buttons on that "universal" remote? There are lots and lots of components out there and they are all different. What id there is a button on your manufacturer's provided remote that is not on your universal remote? Well, then you don't get that button! This can be a major problem.

So what other options do you have? Lots! Today's sophisticated home-theater systems normally incorporate a universal remote, but we now prefer to call them "control systems". Imagine coming home after a long day at work, and you want to watch the news. You pick up a nice looking remote off of its charging cradle. You look at the remote and hit the button that says "Watch Cable". Suddenly you hear lots of clicks and beeps….lots of them! Your system has turned on and completed those eight to fourteen steps after you pushed one button.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! These control systems come in all different varieties. Much like buying any other piece of electronics, there are many options to choose from. Some take standard batteries. Others have rechargeable ones. Some plug in to a charger. Others sit in a cradle. Some have a black and white LCD screen. Others have a color graphic display. Some have this display with hard buttons. Others have a screen you touch.

Looking at all the buttons on the remote, and still not seeing that button from the manufacturer's remote that you want? No problem! Most control systems allow for customized buttons on an LCD screen. These can be custom programmed for one command or can even produce multiple commands in macro!

So, you're controlling all of your equipment there under your TV right? Wait, what if it's not right there under your TV? What do I mean? Well, one of the hottest trends in home audio and video is not a product. It is the ability to hide all of your components. Have a hall closet holding nothing but the kids' winter clothes? Maybe there's some space in there for your receiver, cable box, DVD player, and the kids' video game systems! All of these control systems allow for the option of RF control. Everything can be hidden away behind closed doors.

As I usually tell my clients when they have a wild idea, there is almost always a way to accomplish it!

Installation Standards

Have you ever had an audio/video installation before?  Maybe you have, but you were not happy with it…

Having anyone work in your home can be nerve-wracking.  What mistakes may happen? What is it really going to look like when it's done?  Do these guys really know what they are doing?

Let's take a minute and walk through it from start to finish.

So, you have an interest in a new home-theater system, and maybe something more.  The first thing you do is call us.  We will come to  your house and pick your brain… for free of course!  The idea is not to find out what you want.  The odds are there are, things you haven't even thought of.  We will create a visual for you.  Speaker options, TV, a universal remote, maybe even a way to hide all of your equipment.  You think there is "no way to put the TV there"?  Let's find a way to do it!

From there, we will take your ideas, our ideas, maybe find some new ideas, and create a proposal for you.  If it's more than you expected, that's okay too.  We'll work with you until you are happy with the quote.  There is almost always a way to fit a system into your budget.

Once you okay the quote, we arrange for payment.  Someone will call you to schedule your appointment, and let you know what time we will be at your home.  This time, instead of envisioning your system, you'll get to really see and hear it….but there's a lot of work to be done first!

We will walk in with drop-cloths, and we will wear booties over our shoes at your request.  Drop cloths will be present where ever we are working, or where there are tools or boxes.  Shop-vacs, dustpans, cleaning materials, all to make sure when all the work is done, your home looks as good (or better) than it did when we got there.

Now the work starts.  We always take every precaution to avoid "blemishes".  We will poke and prod your walls every which way to avoid the "misplaced hole".  We didn't cut any holes in your house on the first visit (we hardly knew you!), so this is our first time really seeing the guts of your house.  If there needs to be any changes to the original plan, we like look for this first.  Maybe there is a drain pipe in a wall right where you wanted your in-wall speaker.  We don't have x-ray vision…yet…but we do have the next best thing.  If we are concerned that there may be something in a wall that would prevent us from working with it, we can …….oh wait this is a subject for a future blog!  You'll have to see our next article to find out about our love of "new tools".  We are suckers for anything that will help get the job done cleaner and more efficient.  Sometimes these things actually work!

Piece by piece you'll see your theater come together.  First there will be some holes in your walls, then there will be these brackets and bolts, look at all these wires….  Hey, where did that speaker come from?  Next thing you know the kids are watching Spongebob while we're introducing you to your new universal remote.

We always design a universal remote into our systems.  You usually have the option to take it out of the quote, but we like to at least educate you on it.  There will be an upcoming blog on these bad-boys as well!

We will not leave your house until you are comfortable with operating your system….or you kick us out!  By "comfortable", I mean you can turn your system on, operate it, and shut it off.  There are always additional questions that come up, but this is normal and is to be expected.  We always ask that you keep a piece of paper and write down any questions or concerns you have.  In a week or so, you can contact us with your questions, or ask us to come out for a free follow-up.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

That's it! That's all she wrote.  Of course there are little intricacies to every new project, but this gives you an idea of what happens.  Come see us again, and we'll have some more information for you!

Great Job!

John showed up at my house and spent an hour walking through my house to understand what I wanted. He provided a free quote that was honestly quite a bit lower than I expected. I evaluated several installers and Tailor-Made was the most qualified and actually had the ...lowest price which made my decision easy. Installation day was an exercise in efficiency. John and Greg installed all of the aforementioned components, ran speaker and cable wire through the walls to multiple rooms and had everything working flawlessly by dinner time. The last step was handing me a Universal Remote that controlled everything using simple to understand commands that even my father-in-law mastered the first time. Now I get to enjoy this system everyday and I must say it is truly amazing. Watching blu-ray movies with the new lossless audio formats firing out of the seven speakers is actually better than going to a good movie theatre. Listening to music is like a live show. - Jeff Sudbury, MA

Thrilled

My experience with you and your staff was an extremely pleasant and happy experience. I have been enjoying all the hard work you put into assembling my very sophisticated Home Theater system. I think of all of you every time I turn on my television(s) and use my remot...e system. You can't imagine how impressed my friends are when they come to my home and see the set up I have. I have hosted several Super Bowl parties since you installed my home theater and the compliments just keep flowing. It's been beyond what I ever expected or hoped to have. You can be sure I will recommend you and your company to friends who are looking to set up a home theater system of their own. Your knowledge and persistence in installing and giving top quality service is something that one doesn't find very often today. I just want you to know that I could never thank you enough for making my home entertainment one of the biggest pleasures in my life. `Rosemarie Saugus, MA
