Bathroom Remodel Safety Considerations
Here are some of the basics you might consider as you plan your bathroom remodel.
- Use ground-fault circuit interrupters () on all outlets in a bathroom. These devices can prevent damage to your electrical system and protect your family from injury.
- Use water-proof electrical fixtures near the tub, shower, sinks and toilets. This will protect your electrical system in the event of water being splashed on an outlet or other fixture.
- Install only anti-scald faucets. This is important for the entire family, but it is particularly important in a bathroom that will be used by children.
- Consider using lever-type handles on faucets. Levers are easier to turn, particularly for the aging and people with disabilities.
- In developing your bathroom remodel design, keep in mind that steps or platforms providing access to showers and tubs can become very slippery. You might want to consider a non-slip surface for these areas if you include them. This could be an important step in preventing injury from a fall.
- Choose a non-slip surface for tub and shower tray. This can help to prevent slips and falls for people of all ages.
- When choosing a tub or shower, be sure everyone who will use it can get in and out safely and easily before you install it.
- In choosing lighting fixtures for the shower, be sure to choose only fixtures designed to protect the wiring from moisture.
- Use bright lights around the tub and shower. This makes it easier to see any water on the floor and helps to prevent slips and falls.
- Use safety glass in shower doors and windows near the tub or shower. This will help to minimize injury if someone slips.
- If there are children in the house, install safety locks on medicine cabinets and all cabinets in which you will store potentially harmful cleaning products or medicines.
- Install grab bars beside shower, tub and toilet.
Be sure to check with your local governing agency about specific requirements for bathroom remodels. These building code requirements vary widely from one locality to another. Whether these features are required or optional in your region, these safety considerations are worth your time.

D.C. Basement Remodeling
Looking for additional living space, exercise room, entertainment center or playroom? Go underground! If your home has an outdated or unfinished basement, remodeling might be a great way to transform this commonly under-used space.
When considering a basement remodel, start by making a floor plan. As you do, be sure to mark the location of your furnace, washer and dryer, and any other large appliances. Take notes on:
- access to the basement from upstairs and outside;
- where plumbing is already located if you want an additional bathroom;
- where vertical support columns are located;
- location of windows and doors;
- floor / ceiling / wall materials.
With constant contact with the earth, basements are vulnerable to
dampness, making basement remodeling a bit more complex than first meets
the eye. We'll help you take appropriate measures to ensure a room free
from moisture.
Most basements have low ceilings and few windows. But this doesn't have
to limit you. There are many creative ways to make your basement light
and airy. Talk to us about the variety of wall and ceiling lighting
options available. Servicez Unlimited will help you make sure that
appropriate electrical lines and outlets are provided from the
beginning.
Here are some tricks-of-the-trade in making your underground space first class:
Stay away from dark wood paneling and instead consider drywall painted in light
tones to make the room brighter. Semi-gloss paint will gently reflect even more light
into the room.
Open up the visual space. Double doors even glass double interior doors take
away the typical cubicle look. Or, how about a rounded archway or pass-through area from one room into another.
Check to see if existing windows can be enlarged. Or, consider installing a small boxed window for a mini-garden to grow herbs or start plant seedlings. This will greatly increase the amount of light coming into the basement and provide a view to the great outdoors.
Built-in bookcases and entertainment units add a richness and depth to a room. Light them with either interior lights or from the top to cast light upwards.
Disguise vertical support beams, and horizontal ceiling pipes or floor joists by boxing them in. Or, you might decide to actually use pipes and beams as interesting accents by painting them with bold colors or with subtle earth tones.
An unfinished basement is much like a diamond in the rough unexplored splendor
awaiting your discovery!

Bathroom Remodeling Will Add a new Life to Your Home
There are many ways to remodel a bathroom and depending on how extensive of a remodel project you want, you could spend three or four times the normal amount if you are doing a lot of tile work, granite counters, new cabinetry, etc. Usually the older the bathroom the more extensive and expensive the remodel project will be.
There are so many things to consider when renovating your bathroom. Replacing the current window with a larger one will add light and also give you an opportunity to add a more energy efficient window. Maybe you can add a skylight, this is an excellent way to bring in more light and increase the feeling of spaciousness. Replacing fixtures with modern designs can make a bathroom more decorative and style that not only looks good, but is functional. There is a wide price range for light fixtures, so you can easily pick one that fits your budget. Replacing a toilet can be a simple thing if you avoid the most common mistakes made by many homeowners.
Remember,your Shower Door will be the first thing you see when you enter any room so you might want to start here! Pick out something unique!
A shower remodel is also a perfect time to experiment with shower heads. There are many types, styles and brands you can choose from. The type of concrete used for shower walls and floors is highly engineered and a must if your looking for the perfect job. Tiles are generally durable, and you won't have to worry about replacing them if you choose the right material.
Tile is also an area where you have a wide range of choices. From sheet linoleum to ceramic tile the choices are numerous. Tile mosaics are especially popular in Mediterranean style bathrooms. Tile can also be used as decorative design pieces (glazed, glass mosaic or quarry styles).
Bathroom flooring, more than anything else, can have a stunning effect on the overall look of a bathroom; choose bathroom flooring wisely and you will achieve the bathroom of your dreams? Many homeowners like to install below floor heating, which is recommended with a stone or concrete floor.
You can install hardwood floors on the floor of your Bathroom, provided that they are coated with a water-proof finish. Many people will opt for this type of flooring in this part of the house because it provides warmth and has the effect of creating a soft relaxing atmosphere.
Neutral colors are probably your best bet and will last for many years to come. Some contractors will recommend using self leveling cement but good old poured concrete screened floors is the only way to get that perfect job. Selecting a bathroom remodeling contractor by referrals is also the best way to choose the right company for the job.
