About Marathon, NY
Marathon is a part of the Central New York region, near the city of Cortland. The Tioughnioga River crosses the town, which lies in close proximity to Interstate-81. Marathon was founded in 1784, and today encompasses an area of 25 square miles. The old Central New York Military Tract, an area of land given to former Revolutionary War soldiers, included Marathon within its borders. Every year in the spring Marathon hosts the Central New York Maple Festival. Famous persons from Marathon include the political boss Thurlow Weed.
