The village of Alfred, named for King Alfred of England, is a college town located on Whitney Valley and Dyke creeks in the Southern Tier region in Allegany County, New York. Major attractions include the Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art, which houses nearly 8,000 ceramic and glass objects and the Stull Observatory, which is open to the public one night per week. Some of the businesses in Alfred are Spears Auction and Fox's Pizza. The biggest schools here are Alfred University and Alfred State College of Technology. One of the best places to visit when you are in Alfred is the 999-acre Phillips Creek State Forest, where you can enjoy outdoor recreational activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, camping, bird watching, nature photography and hunting.
