If One Has Diabetes Can One Still Obtain Health Insurance?
"Unfortunately, if you are an adult (over age 19) and have been diagnosed with diabetes you will not be able to obtain individual, private health coverage, regardless of whether or not you are insulin dependent or take oral medication. However, you are able to get health coverage through an Employer sponsored group plan. If you do not have access to a group sponsored health plan, your only option is the State or Federal Risks Pools. As of September 23, 2010, all children (age 19 and younger) must be approved for health coverage regardless of any pre-existing condition they may have, including diabetes. However, almost all insurance carriers have exited the "child only" market because of this mandate (meaning they will not offer ANY policies to any child that does not also include coverage for an adult as well). In the Kansas City area, BlueCross BlueShield of Kansas City WILL still offer a policy for a "child only" - they are the only insurance company in the metro that will. ~ Lori Finkbeiner, A+ Insurance Benefits, LLC"
