Building a great sandwich involves a number of components — quality meats and cheeses, crisp vegetables, fresh bread and a variety of toppings to round out the taste.

Mr. Hoagie, located at 4737 Lebanon Church Road, provides all that and more to its customers and has been doing so for more than 40 years.

For its efforts, the shop has been awarded the 2012 Readers' Choice Neighborhood Award for Best Hoagie.

Owner Andy Borriello said the family started the business with a single sandwich — the over-baked Italian hoagie.

"It really took off from there," said Borriello.  When the shop opened 45 years ago, it provided local customers with a unique eating experience. "We were the only hoagie shop in the area," said Borriello. 

Now, as other sandwich shops have come and gone, Mr. Hoagie has remained because of its commitment to customers. 

"We've showed that a lot of long hours and hard work pay off," Borriello said.  

Over the years Mr. Hoagie has expanded its offerings from its over-baked beginning.  "Now we have a variety of hoagies," said Borriello. Customers can choose from selections including a porterhouse steak hoagie, a homemade hot sausage or meatball creation and a veggie offering that includes mountains of provolone cheese. “A lot of people go with turkey because it's healthy.”

"We're still making the hoagies the same way as we did 45 years ago, using all the quality meats and cheese," Borriello said. 

Other newer menu items include pizza, sandwiches and a number of "from the fryer" items, drinks and shakes.  Coupons are available on the store's website.

"We thank all our customers," Borriello said.  "We also want to thank the other local businesses, because they stop in and give us a lot of business as well."
