Bolivar is the county seat of Polk County, Missouri. Bolivar is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2000 census the population was 9,143. The city was named for Bolivar, Tennessee, which was home to many of the original settlers. The town is best known as the home of Southwest Baptist University. Bolivar is named after the South American historical figure, Simón Bolívar, nicknamed El Libertador. Popular attractions include the Dunnegan Gallery of Art, and the Polk County Museum. The biggest schools here are Bolivar Primary and Bolivar High, whose mascot is The Liberator.
