Hank's Foods

5.0

By Margaret Sch

A group of us cousins came to town as a phase of a week-long family reunion, and needed some yummy picnic goodies, so I called the chamber of commerce to ask for a suggestion. They suggested Hank's, and it was a perfect choice. With a phone call ahead, they had the roasted chickens, potato salad and cole slaw ready. Portions were generous, prices were good, selection was great, personal service excellent. I strongly recommend Hank's for any grocery or deli needs. ...read more

The Grass is Finally Green!!!!!

I didn't know what else to title this so an announcement that my yard has finally turned green seemed fitting as I'm quite excited to see green rather than white or brown. The dogs don't seem to mind either way, although Max my lab has developed a reaction to mud that will make you laugh. He's a big lab, and being bred for hunting on land and water shouldn't mind a little mud. Max however has never read the "Book of Lab" (he doesn't even care to retrieve) and reacts to mud as if its a deadly curse that he must avoid touching at all costs. When left with no choice but to cross through a patch of mud he appears to be in high heels as he will walk as far up on his toes as he can all the while his facial expression says "Ew, ew it touched me ew". Bindi my mali has a completely opposite reaction, she doesn't care if she gets muddy, in fact she'll go as far as to roll in the mud and go from a brown dog to a black dog rather quickly. All the while Max watches in horror. Silly pups. Since spring is the time for new things it only seems fitting that we're also working on some new things. Two projects I'm currently working on include the Be A Tree Dog Bite Prevention program, and having John Holman come up and give a herding dog demonstration. The Be A Tree Dog Bite Prevention program through the non-profit organization Dog Gone Safe http://www.doggonesafe.com teaches children how to act appropriately around dogs and what to do if approached by a strange dog. Educating the community, especially children on how to prevent dog bites is very important to me. I firmly believe that even if a child's family doesn't own a dog that all children should be educated in how to act around dogs. Dogs are everywhere, at some point every child will run into a dog and I hope that the experience is above all else safe. This program will be offered free. Next I am currently talking to John Holman about coming up to do a herding dog demonstration. John is a licensed AKC, AHBA and USBCHA judge. Herding dogs are a thrill to watch and the demonstration will be something everyone can enjoy. For more information about John you can view his website http://www.dog4ewe.com We're very excited about the demonstration and the dog bite prevention program. So now its confession time. I will admit that I get a bit a lazy during the winter months, and as a result I sometimes put on a bit of "winter weight".  How many of you are in the same in the boat? Come on now be honest. Spring is the perfect time for us to get back into shape after a long winter of hibernating, not only for us but for our pets as well. In fact the Pipestone Veterinary Clinic is holding a Pet Fit Challenge this year in conjunction with Science Diet's national challenge. Overweight pets are not healthy pets and just like in people being overweight can create long term health issues. The Pipestone Veterinary Clinic will be holding a kick off event May 30th at Harmon Park in Pipestone. Registration begins at 8am and goes until 9:30am with the first walkers starting at 9am. You can pre-register by May 15th for $5 at the vet clinic. For more information on the Pet Fit Challenge visit the Pipestone Vet Clinic blogspot at http://pipestonevetclinic-petfitchallenge.blogspot.com/ Even if your pet is fit I would encourage everyone to attend and sign up for the challenge. I think the kick off event will be fun for everyone involved and the vet clinic is also holding a "miles" challenge so everyone can take part. I wish I could say "See you there" but I will be out of town that weekend attending a Kathy Sdao seminar. Thanks for reading and happy training, Jess ...read more
