Why second hand stores are a beneift to a communtiy
As we were receiving some new donations today, we once again saw stickers from a local major department store. Just to the right of that sticker (By the way the tag reads $49.99) was a "CLEARANCE" Stickert at $29.99 from the same store. Just below that "clearance" tag, was one from a local second hand store that is part of a national chain, naming their price of only $14.99. And, NOW, our orange tag......just $4.99.Whats CraZy is that, it still looks like it is brand new! Yesterday, while guest speaking to a group,I was asked just what is the purpose of a second hand store. It was a great question form the audienece, but not one that I could just give out ONE answer to. And, it got me thinking; One of our roles, is simply to sell merchandise that (most often but not always) is slightly used. Perhaps it came from a donor that cleaned out a closet, or atic, or whos infant has now outgrown something. Interestingly, we help the donor, by giving them a place toget rid of something they no longer wanted(Can you imagine the fees attached to just throwing things out - especially if they DON'T FIT in your garbage conatiner? The add on and extra service fees are killer! We aslo help because our prices are generally75% LESS THAN RETAIL!Years ago, Second Hand stores were often looked at as a palce for the needy to shop. However, the pendulum has swong the entire opposite direction! In todays economy - everyone can use a good quality second hand store like Garage Sale Outlet. A very wise man once said a "penny saved is a penny earned"! Today, Second Hand stores are almost "chic" between those who don't want to pay retial, people that are redecorating, those that are repurposing like our friends on Pinterest, and YES - even the folks that just want to BRAG to their inner circle friends that they saved a ton of money on something really cute! At GSO, we also notice the amount of inventory that would, in most cases, just end up in our landfills. the world doesn't have to be all "Go Green" Crazy to know the damage done to our environment whenwe just keep burrying and burning. SO - a second hand store has a positive impact on the environment as well. OurEmergency Food Shelf and Personal Care Pantryis another role where we serve the community. This voucher based system helps people that just need to make it to their next paycheck, or maybe their regualr food shelf appointment, or until mom or dad are back into the home from a brief medical emergency! We are one of the only food shelves that - through the extreeme coupon shopping and donations, has a personal care pantry with items like Shampoo, Deoderant, Tooth Paste, and like items. We also help people that, for whatever reason, don't want to just sit and watch the snowflakes go by their window! YUCK!Our Volunteershave included (and we are SOoooo Thankful to them), 4-H, Singles Group Activity Night, National Honor Society Students, Civic Class Students from RHS 9th Grade, Students from Transitions Plus High School that are learning job and life skills, folks that just shopped here and like the "cause" of GSO, Friends and Neighbors from the community that may have Community Service Hours to perform for the Courts or Community Corrections, and just so many many more walks of life. We are 100% Volunteer run - so they are very precious to us! Garage Sale Outlet, because of out wonderful doantions, and our great volunteers,is able to return profits to local (Dakota County MN) residents, non profits, charities, ministries, adn other people in need. We are a faith based, Christ Centered Second Hand store that beleives in paying it forward! These are just SOME of the ways the community benefits from a Second Hand Store like garage Sale Outlet! We have many roles, and depend on the community to support us in the ways mentioned above. There are MANY waysyou can help Garage Sale Outlet. Donations in the form of merchandise, cash, food, and new personal care items for our Emergency Food Shelf/Pantry are one way.
