About Calumet, MI
Calumet is a village in Houghton County, Michigan, located in Calumet Township. It is a part of the state's Upper Peninsula and was once the center of the mining industry. It was originally called Red Jacket in honor of the Native American Chief of the Seneca Tribe. It was settled in 1864. The village also has the Calumet Downtown Historic District which is among the list of the National Register of Historic Places. Major attractions in Calumet include the Calumet Theatre and the Coppertown USA Mining Museum. Each year in the summer there is the Pasty Fest. The school system here is Calumet Public Schools. Famous people from Calumet include actor James Tolken, multi-millionaire Percy Ross and college football player George Gipp.
