Salem is a city in, as well as the county seat of, Washington County, Indiana. The city's whole downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city's most recognizable landmarks is the Washington County Courthouse which is located in the town square. Riley's Place, located in the city's DePauw Park, is a large children's playground named in honor of Riley Jean Tomlinson. The city's Lake Salinda has been said to be the home of the Salinda Serpent, a giant snake the people have reported seeing here. The city is host to the Old Settler's Day which features historical re-enactments as well as arts and crafts. The legendary Salem Speedway, a half mile oval track which was built in 1947 is located in Salem as well. Legendary NASCAR drivers such as Mario Andretti, Jeff Gordon and AJ Foyt have raced the track. Students living in the city attend the Salem Community Schools which consists of four schools.
