Sloppy Jo's Lunchroom - This is the place!

This little gem of a restaruant in Highland Park's Ravinia neighborhood is a wonderful, classic place -- the kind of place you walk into and think, "I should have thought of this!" The brightly lit lunchroom features classic "homestyle" dishes including, of course, delicious sloppy joes on soft hollowed-out soft rolls; a killer tuna sandwich with a side of sweet pickles, hot dogs, grilled cheese and other kid (and adult) favorites. All the prices are reasonable and it couldn't be more kid friendly -- it's spanking clean and the staff wipes up spills, whips out high chairs, and provides Etch-A-Sketches for entertainment while you're waiting for your food. They also have ice cream, great bottled sodas and a wonderful atmosphere that makes this a great place to visit when you need a pick-me up. I thought of this place with kids but there were plenty of adults picking up a sloppy joe sandwitch when we visited. They have a few tables and do a big carry out business as well. The lunchroom is open Tuesday-Saturday. My kids love this place for the rack of penny (yes, you can buy candy for .03 cents here) and I love the fact that it's candy from my youth. There's something fun about sharing a box of Chuckles with your kids and explaining that I used to enjoy these back in the "Olden Days." A bonus is that Sloppy Jos uses biodegradable products like spoons and cups. If you're in Highland Park this is definitely a destination restaurant -- it's close to the beach and Ravinia Festival so it's a great stop after a kids concert or before a beach outing. In winter it's just off the Ravinia Metra stop so you could make it a fun "take the train" outing with kids. ...read more

How Do Restaurants Make Enchiladas?

Many people think that an enchilada in a restaurant is much better than anything they can ever find at home, unless they know a lot of Hispanic people.
