About Annawan, IL
Annawan is located in Henry County, Illinois. The village had an estimated population of 957 in 2008. The 2000 census puts the population at 868. In 1846 the first log cabin was built in the area that was to become Annawan by Daniel Morton. In 1853 the railroad was completed in the area and Annawan officially became a village. The village was named after a Winnebago Indian Chief. Annwan is built on marshland but in the early 20th century much of this marshland was drained with water being channelled into the nearby Green River so that more farmland could be created. Annawan is currently a fast growing community with many new subdivisions being built on its outskirts. It is a part of the Annawan School District of which Annawan High School is the largest school. The village also has a weekly local newspaper called the the Annawan Times. Annawan is also building a Peaker Plant to generate energy to support its growing population. Annawan businesses include Johnston Lumber and American Eagle Buildings. Area attractions include the Mineral Marsh Nature Preserve and the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park.
