About Pahoa, HI
Pahoa is a small town in the Puna District of the Big Island of Hawaii. Once an economic center for sawmills and a stop on the old railroad, Pahoa retains an old-town feel in its Western storefronts, Victorian-style buildings, and wooden boardwalks. Most residents work in small businesses that are part of the tourism industry. The largest school is Pahoa High and Intermediate School. Surrounded by the beauty of rural Hawaii, Pahoa is close to many attractions. Its Akebono Theater is Hawaii's oldest, and it features classic films, plays, and musicals. It hosts the seasonal Pahoa Surf Film Festival. Another nearby attraction is Lava Tree State Park. Eerie lava trees, trunks surrounded by molds of lava, stand in a stone grove. BF Dillingham was a famous past resident, who financed the railroad that passed through town.
