Pele Plantations Estate Kona Coffee

5.0

By Kona Colin at Citysearch

Pele Plantations offers several certified organic coffees, fresh roasted to order. Having won many awards, the coffees at this Honaunau plantation in South Kona are loved by many. We had heard about them while looking into what farms to visit and what coffees had taken top honors in recent years. Our most recent visit to the Big Island we were able to visit the farm, get a tour and see how everything is done. Coffee isnt roasted until an order is placed. At that point we could get ours that day, or have it just a few days later on the east coast via fedex. All the coffees are delicious and have great aroma. The Brocksengate estate organic was our favourite and one that we savour at home. Be sure to request the "Pele roast", it brings out the flavours of the beans. If you are in the area or plan to be, give them a call and set up a tour or stop by to pick up some fresh roasted coffee. They are 2-3 minutes from the Honaunau Post office, Mauka of the Mamalahoa Highway. Find them at their website PelePlantations dot com we are glad that we did. ...read more

2012 Cream of the Crop Finalist!!!!

Its been a while since we have entered the Cream of the Crop Competition.  There were many coffee farms that  entered this year.  All the coffees are very good!!!!   We are proud that we placed 3rd in the People's Choice!  Many farms have been hit hard by the coffee bearer borer.  The last time I posted in this blog, we were not effected by this bug.  However, this year, the bug has come to our farm.  But... with Grandma's persistence of caring for the trees and checking the Coffee Bearer Borer traps religously, the damage to our field is minimal and Grandma estimates the damage at less than 1% of our yield.  We hope that we can continue to keep the damage to a minimum. We give you the best that we have to offer. ...read more

Coffee Bearer Borer found in North and South Kona.

Its been a while since I posted a blog.  Much has changed and recently the tsunami in Japan had far reaching effects as it hit Hawaii.  Fortunately for Hawaii, no one perished and the only damage was to structures and surroundings.  The coffee bearer borer has been found on the Kona Coast and I am positive that you will find it on the entire island including Ka'u, Hilo and Hamakua. For the coffee farmer, the coffee bearer borer is like a disaster.  This borer can wreak havoc on the yield of all the coffee produced.  I have heard of farms that are infested with these little borers that attack the beans. Many farms have posted pictures of the damage of the borer.  As of this writing, Greenwell Farms has taken the lead role as they have unselfishly offered their assistance and you can pick up traps for the borers as well as the solution that attracts the borers.  The traps are around 1.50 and the local school (Konawaena High) kids are making the traps. Hapaki Farm has set up these traps on all of our acres of coffee.  Grandma and I have been checking the traps and I am very happy that I dont see any of those coffee bearer borer pests. I dont know why we are fortunate and that our field is not infested.  If I had to guess, I would say that it could be  our farm's location with no other coffee farms around us.  It also could be that we pick our own coffee and dont utilize the service of a coffee picking crew that goes around on numerous farms to pick coffee.  It also could be that we process our own coffee from picking, pulping and drying and only from our coffee farm. Like the cocqui frog that invested the island of Hawaii, the coffee bearer borer is the same.   I can hear the cocqui frog in neighboring acres like a storm coming our way.  As of now, we have no cocqui frog on our property. How long will our acreage be free of the pests?   I dont know.  But as of this writing, we are free.   ...read more
