A visit to the Roundhouse Railroad Museum is a step into the glory days of American Railroading. The Roundhouse was constructed to service the steam locomotives of the Central of Georgia Railway. During its peak, the Central of Georgia Railway was one of the largest continuous railway systems in the world and the largest employer in Savannah. It began operation in 1933 and closed in 1963. The repair complex is a National Historic Landmark and is owned and operated by the Coastal Heritage Society. Tours include riding a train, operating a hand car and touring a number of period railroad cars.
