How to Hire a Plumber For Emergency Repairs

When a pipe bursts or some other piece of plumbing malfunctions, our first instinct is to get the problem under control as soon as possible. The longer such an issue goes on, the harder it will be to repair. Not only will the issue be harder to fix, if left unaddressed, the problem could result in hundreds to thousands of dollars in property damage and water usage fees. Because time is of the essence during a plumbing emergency, we feel pressured to make a repair decision as soon as possible, without giving ourselves time to weigh our options completely.

Stop. Take a deep breath. Relax.

The truth is you really do have time to make an informed decision about the best way to handle your plumbing problem. There are some simple, but effective preventive measures that you can take to safeguard yourself and your home against damage and loss. Knowing what to do and what to look for are key to getting the kind of service you'd expect from a repair professional.

The first and possibly most important step that you can take to minimize damage is to turn off the water supply at the source of the problem. If your problem is a busted pipe spewing water, you can turn off the water supply to the house by using the shut off valve provided by your water department. This valve is usually located somewhere in your yard, under a rectangular shaped lid that also contains your water meter. You will need a wrench to do this. If you have a more localized problem, such as a toilet or water heater that is leaking, you can turn off the water supply to these separately. A toilet shut off valve is usually an oval shaped handle, located near the base of the toilet. A water heater's shut off valve is located next to the water pipes.

After you've shut off water to the problem, locating a reputable plumber is the next step. You might want to make a quick call to a few friends or family members to see if they can recommend anyone to you. An online search with review sites like Yelp.com and other local directories can help turn up more prospects. Ideally, you want to find a plumber with plenty of positive reviews. Remember that in most states, plumbers are required to serve an apprenticeship prior to getting their own license, so years of experience might be harder to ascertain based on years licensed alone. Ads you find may advertise certain specialties which will help you narrow the field. Once you have a few names, give them a call and get quotes on the repair in question. It's a good idea to inquire about warranties on their work as well as satisfaction guarantees. If you have the time, it is also wise to investigate any professionals you may hire through the Better Business Bureau.

Be aware that most plumbers charge a hefty fee for working after hours and on holidays. Some charge mileage and other fees on top of their hourly fee. Inquiring about all this beforehand can help avoid expensive surprises when the bill comes.

Of course, in an ideal world, you'll already have the names of a few trusted repair professionals that you can call on before an emergency happens. A little foresight can go a long way in these matters. After all, it's your house and you don't want to trust it to just anyone - especially when botched repairs can cost a lot of money and cause a lot of heartache down the road.

'Recharge Colorado' Campaign Opens Morning of April 19; GEO Announces Web Address, Call Center Number
Coloradans can save money, energy with rebates, one-stop website; GEO partners with utilities, local governments and service providers

The Governor's Energy Office (GEO) will be offering rebates for various energy upgrades beginning 8 a.m. April 19 as part of the state's 'Recharge Colorado' campaign.

Residents can tap into the campaign at www.RechargeColorado.com, where they can reserve a rebate on-line. As a supplement to the web site, a call center will also be available at 1-800-462-0184. Please note: The web site and call center will not be operational until 8 a.m. April 19. There will be no information at the web address or call center number prior to that time.

The GEO and its local partners expect brisk consumer action, particularly for ENERGY STAR dishwashers, clothes washers and refrigerators. The ENERGY STAR appliances account for about 16,000 of the rebates available. In light of that, it's important for consumers statewide to have realistic expectations and recognize the "sweepstakes" nature of the program.

The Recharge Colorado website and call center were developed to help people across the state learn how to make energy savings a simple part of their everyday lives. The new site will offer personalized energy planning tools and a comprehensive, first-of-its-kind database that will pull in energy-related information from around the state. The site will also help consumers find the latest rebates on energy-efficient appliances, insulation and solar power, the simplest ways to weather-proof their homes at the lowest cost and the newest energy innovations and opportunities available where they live.

Recharge Colorado creates a one-stop clearinghouse of information and resources by bringing details about products, rebates, tax breaks and other benefits offered by the Governor's Energy Office, utilities and local governments across Colorado to a single place. The Recharge Colorado campaign is also teaming with the Better Business Bureau to help consumers connect with the many outstanding energy efficiency and renewable energy service providers.

"We want citizens to plug into our Recharge Colorado campaign, and learn what they can do to save money and create jobs," said Governor's Energy Office director Tom Plant. "This comprehensive resource will give Colorado residents the opportunity to participate in energy conservation in a way that no other state can currently offer."

For more detailed information about the Recharge Colorado rebates prior to April 19, visit the GEO website at www.colorado.gov/energy.

Rebates overview:

Through the Recharge Colorado campaign, the Governor's Energy Office, utilities, cities and counties across the state are partnering to offer money-saving rebates and programs to enable Coloradans to participate in the New Energy Economy. Rebates can be reserved through the Recharge Colorado website beginning April 19 and will be available until the money runs out. Rebates include:

  • Replacement appliance rebates for clothes washers, refrigerators and dishwashers
  • Home upgrade rebates such as insulation, furnaces and water heaters
  • Solar electric and hot water rebates and wind rebates

The GEO and its partners are providing roughly $18 million worth of rebates for Colorado with this program. The money is expected to provide approximately 75,000 rebates, including about 16,000 rebates for ENERGY STAR refrigerators, dishwashers and clothes washers.

Getting loans for "Green" projects

Green Banks Thrive

Capitalizing on the green movement, a growing number of financial institutions have sprouted up in the United States and elsewhere. Promoting earth-friendly policies, these green banks have appeared in numerous US cities and other countries, including France, Mexico, and elsewhere.

The concept originated in Europe with the need to finance "alternative projects", socially and environmentally desirable developments. Committed to ethical and responsible banking practices, France's Credit Agricole supports producing responsible products and services and reducing effects of climate change.

Green banks support environmentally friendly strategies by providing lower interest rates on loans to green builders and borrowers who buy fuel-efficient cars, as well as incentives to depositors who opt out of paper statements. Consumers feel positively towards these green improvements. A recent survey found that 56 percent of respondents believe paperless statements to be ecologically friendly---not just a cost-cutting ploy on the part of the banks.

As the economy emerges from its contraction, GreenChoice Bank, located in the Midwest, hopes to be one of the region's first green lenders. GreenChoice's chief operating officer, Steve Sherman, is accredited in green building practices by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). GreenChoice will reward green builders and consumers who opt not to receive paper statements. They will soon provide envelope-free ATM deposits and "remote deposit capture", a way for business customers to deposit checks without visiting a bank. Another example: First Green Bank, which opened last February, offered zero-interest loans to workers who bought cars that get more than 30 miles a gallon.

Another traditional lender, PrivateBank, financed part of a USD $1 million-plus loan for the Little Green Tree House that opened an environmentally friendly day-care center.

Jumping on the bandwagon, the major banks of the US have embraced green practices. HSBC donated $100 million USD to four environmental organizations and Wachovia, now a subsidiary of Wells Fargo, announced that it would build only "green branches" as it expanded into California and Texas.

Expect more financial institutions and other enterprises worldwide to join in this green movement; it makes organizations more attractive to both internal and external customers.

Excellent Plumbing, Heating and Mechanical

"They are truly excellent! I had another company look at my heater to see what was wrong. They were "ify" about the diagnosis and the price was more than I could handle. I called Excellent. They gave me a price quote over the phone "if" diagnosed and fixed within a cert...ain time frame. The problem was difficult and required extra time, but they fixed the problem and charged me less than quoted. Knowledgeable and affordable. What a blessing they are!"
