DUCTZ and Hurrican Sandy Restoration
From DUCTZ National Service Team Help restore the New York Medical Center after Hurricane Sandy:
It's 38 degrees in the basement of New York Medical Center and all our staff is arriving from an hour and a half drive into Manhattan from our central jersey hotel, the only one that could accommodate us. They started at 5am as usual over the last few weeks, all arrived in 5, 12 passenger vans driven by the management staff and checked in at 7am to begin yet another minimum 12 hour work day to restore this critical hospital for the community. The team understands the day may go longer based upon the past week’s schedule and emergency sections of the hospital needing completion. Weeks before this the entire DUCTZ management team quietly told me that they were prepared to stay for the Christmas holiday recognizing the schedule could never be kept if they all came home for the holiday. To challenge the team further the flu permeated all 85 workers, the kind of flu that just zaps every ounce of energy, pounds your head and steals your voice. Energy drinks, coffee and sugar are sustaining the days. DUCTZ franchisee owners and their staff have come from around the country to restore these mechanical systems all located in a 4 city block massive hospital complex on the east side of Manhattan next to the East river. The entire complex of towering buildings had to be evacuated due to Hurricane Sandy. There is no heat in the work areas and the building is freezing during the day. Yet the entire DUCTZ team shows a work ethics that is remarkable. On this day, another smaller duct cleaner could not complete their critical deadline and the project management team asked Sami and Mutt if we could complete our already impossible schedule and take on another floor. This day required 18 hours to complete our multiple floors as well as the hour and a half ride back to the hotel. After 25 days without a single day off we now have secured a second project for the mechanical system cleaning at a new location…Ellis Island to begin cleaning up that site and then onto the Statue of Liberty. There is simple no way to describe the extent of the commitment and depth of perseverance of our DUCTZ staff and offices across the country. Stating that I was proud of our staff and franchises would not do this situation justice. That is because these types of commitments come from deep within very special people and can only be given freely from those people when in the line of fire. You learn so much about a person’s character when in these conditions. I am blessed that I am able to experience how serious the DUCTZ professionals take their career and hope every single person involved in these projects can get a few hours rest over the next few days.
