Should I use Swift for my next iOS project

The purpose of this article is to understand whether one needs to develop an app using Objective C (Obj-C) or Swift. Apple claims that Swift "is the first industrial-quality systems programming language that is as expressive and enjoyable as a scripting language." Which in simple words means that is expected to be stable, easier to learn and easier to use. But this might not be the case in the short term. Keeping in mind that Obj-Cis over 30 years old and has evolved and matured as a programming language - Swift would take some time to get there. Being around for such a long time means that most developer queries are answered based on Obj-Ccode as would be the case in sites likeStackoverflow. From a time and cost perspective, one should expect that developing an app in Swift now could take longer and cost more. There are over 1.2 millions apps on the app store and most of which have been written in Obj-C, which means that there would be a significant need to maintain the existing apps, which would ensure a continuing need to work with Obj-C. Pros of Obj-C 1. Apple continues to provide full support for Obj-Cwith no stated intention of deprecating the language 2. Patterns are the same. So if you understand the pattern of one for developing iOS apps, it would be easily to apply the same patterns to the other. All you need is to be familiar with the Syntaxes. 3. Frameworks are the same. Cocoa Touch libraries for interactions and that's still a solid way to deal with it in Obj-C. 4. Obj-C developers would mostly find Swift a waste of time – since they can get everything done using Obj-C. 5. Swift has a limited set of attributes. 6. Huge amount of resources available for Obj-C in terms of learning material, learning sources and community support. Pros of Swift (Cons for Obj-C) 1. Modern programming language similar to Python. Which means less code, which is clean and easier to learn and code. 2. Fixing troublesome behaviour of Obj-C (C family) 3. Easier and automated debugging using a read-eval-print loop (REPL), similar to Python. 4. Real-time output using Playgrounds that are interactive views running within the Xcode environment that respond to code or debugger changes on-the-fly. Timeline assistant for viewing output more interactively. 5. Automatic memory management. 6. Several other modern enhancements as elaborated by some developers : a. Closures unified using function pointers b. Tuples and multiple return values c. Fast and concise iteration over a range or collection d. Structs that are use for support methods, extensions and protocols. e. Functional programming patterns, e.g.: map and filter. f. Generics As of now, Apple supports both codes and they are interoperable within the same app. Which means that Swift code works side-by-side with Obj-C. In the long run it is expected that apple would reduce or remove support for Obj-C. Apple has historically not had an issue in making tectonic shifts in platforms / OS in the longer term interests of its products and platforms. So in all likelihood, Obj-C would become a legacy language in the not too distant future. So our advice would be - while you continue to work on Obj-C, one would have to start work on Swift as well to ensure that one is not caught on the wrong foot when apple decides to make the switch. ...read more
