About Essex, CT
Essex is a part of the Middlesex region/metro area of Connecticut made up of the villages of Centerbrook, Ivoryton, and Essex Village. As of the 2000 census, the town had a population of 6,505 and it has a land area of 10.4 square miles. Essex is often known for its history during the War of 1812 when it was attacked by the British on April 8th, 1814. Major attractions of Essex include the historic mansions of Ivoryton, the historic Pratt house, the Essex Art Association Gallery, the Essex Steam Train, the Ivoryton Playhouse, and the Connecticut River Museum. Each year in spring season there is a "Loser's Day Parade" to commemorate the British attack in 1814.
