Recently, Michael Douglas appeared on the Late Night Show and let David Letterman and the entire world know that he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. While the general public has always had a love and hate relationship with Michael Douglas, this came as a devastating surprise. The world knows that cancer is one of the leading killers in society.  What does stage four cancer really mean?

Cancer has four different stages. Each stage considers:

• Size of the tumor
• how deeply it has penetrated
• how it affects nearby organs
• how many lymph nodes
• has it spread to distant organs

While scientists have failed to find a cure for cancer, we are aware of many preventative tips. The early diagnosis of cancer is the most important predictor of survival. Doctors use the stages to determine the probability of survival. Ideally, Michael would want to be in stage one. However, he was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer. The stages determine the type of treatments a cancer patient will receive.

According to Mr. Douglas, his doctors proclaimed a 80% chance of survival. Stage four can be segregated into two categories. The two sub categories are determined by the size of the tumor. Luckily his cancer has not spread to the rest of his body and is treatable. Michael is receiving chemotherapy and radiation in hope of a cure.

Throat tumors can go unnoticed if they reside on the back of the tongue where doctors cannot see. In addition, Michael told his doctors that he had ear pain and that threw doctors for a loop. That is why it is so important to take abnormal growths on your body seriously. If detected early enough, a tumor can be removed in a matter of hours. However, if a tumor is ignored, it could be deadly!
