Good Debt vs. Bad Debt

Many of us in the business and investing worlds understand the well-kept secret that not all debt is bad debt. Here are a few simple definitions that would change the futures of many Amercans if learned and followed:Cash flow - the actual income one receives after accounting for all profit and all expenses.Passive income - Income that comes from investments and businesses that you have not had to actively work for or earnAssets - businesses or investments that create passive income for you.Good debt - debt that you take on because it is an investment in your education or will create positive cash flow for you. For example, start-up costs associated with founding a well-structured and researched new business. In essence, debt that will put money IN your pocket. The investment in education is also meant to eventually give you the possibility of greater cash flow.Bad debt - debt which will give you no positive cash flow or possibility for positive cash flow in the future. Most of our normal consumer debt purchases fall into this category. Things like cars, boats, RV's, and yes, our Homes. In essence, debts that do nothing but take money OUT of your pocket.Everyone has bad debt...it's a fact of life. We all want certain comforts and conveniences, and most of us don't have the cash on-hand to pay for these items. However, for those who are interested in having a positive and financially independent future, these unneccessary debts must be limited and often totally avoided.Take a look at your own financial picture and evaluate where your money is going. Look deeper than the normal budgeting ideal of, "do I have enough income to cover my monthy expenses?" Ask questions like, "how much passive income have my assets provided for me this month?" If you realize that you have no assets, ask questions like, "how can I put myself in a position to purchase or create assets in the next three months?"Post any questions or comments. I'll read and respond to as many as possible.- N. ...read more
