We’re paying homage to the Mid-Century Era by interviewing some of  Los Angeles top designers and dealers  to share their inspirational designers from the mid-century. Find out who and what inspired them to do what they do today! Our first Interviewee is “Don Stewart”, a Los Angeles Interior Designer and owner of Desiderata Design   Q. Throughout the mid 40’s to mid 60’s, who was your inspirational designer? A. Hands down industrial designer Raymond Loewy.   Q. How did this designer inspire you to do what you do now? A. It’s a long story, but, I started my antique and vintage business because of a Raymond Loewy desk I was having stripped just to see how it would look. We at Desiderata Design designed a cocktail lounge in Las Vegas, New York New York for George Hamilton in homage to Mr. Loewy’s Twentieth Century train car.   Q. What characteristics do you think made this designer special? A. Definitely, The Curve!. Raymond Loewy brought streamline to the masses by creating the iconic look of modern America in the trains, Greyhound buses, refrigerators, Coca Cola, vending machines, logos for Shell, Exxon, the Avanti and the list goes on and on.   Q. What specific item do you love most about this designer? A. It’s a toss up, The 1963 Avanti and the 1954 Greyhound Scenicruiser 1963 Avanti (Photo credit-http://www.curbsideclassic.com) Q. If he was alive today, What would you ask? A. “Can I have your old house in Palm Springs?! Interviewers Note:Sitting down with Don not only taught me about a designer I knew so little about, but also how a designer can influence a person to do so much based on creativity. Raymond Loewy is not only a huge inspiration to Don,but to many designers around the world!. Don Stewart     Our second Interviewee is “Beth Brown”, a glass artist and owner of Glass Tie Studio   Q. Throughout the mid 40’s till mid 60’s who was your inspirational designer? A. I would have to say Harvey Littleton is my inspirational mid-century designer.  I believe no one in all history has had as profound an influence on glass design and glass art as Harvey Littleton. If it wasn’t for Harvey Littleton, I would not own my own kiln nor have the education to make glass at all.  He was not only a great glass artist, aesthetically speaking, his inspiration to move glass making out of factories and into independent studios forever transformed glass as an art form.  From the moment he created the first glass programs at The University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1962-1963 the proliferation and exploration of glass as a media to create art has exploded.   Q. What characteristics do you think made this designer special? A. His ability to take this simple and ubiquitous material and transform it. He not only transformed it, very literally, into new directions of design for glass,but he transformed it by making it available to a wider range of artists by educating and participating in the growth of education in glass making.   Q. What specific item do love most about this designer? A. I love the beautiful Ruby Conical Intersection with Amber Sphere. I love his vision for glass and his ability to act on that vision and change the world.  By working in the media that he loved and freely sharing his knowledge of the material through education he made it available to me and all the other glass artists in the world today   Q. If he were to be alive today, what would you ask? A. I would ask him about his vision for glass design going forward into this century and I would ask him what he thinks about the burgeoning Glass Secessionist Movement.   Interviewers Note: Beth has a unique creativity for glass designing. Learning more about Harvey Littleton, I can say he made a big impact in Beth’s career and will only drive her to continue making wonderful creations as well to also inspire many future glass artists as Littleton did for her. Beth Blind Brown   Our third Interviewee is “Darren Ransdell”, a Los Angeles Designer and owner of  Darren Ransdell Design    Q. Throughout the mid 40’s till mid 60’s who was your inspirational designer? A. I have so many!. Early on my inspiration was derived from Italian Designer, Gio Ponti.   Q. How did this designer inspire you to do what you do now? A. Gio Ponti has inspired some of my design, but I like to think that my own personal style is a reflection of interesting design coupled, in large part, with necessity, productive use of space and need.   Q. What characteristics do you think made this designer special? A. Gio Ponti’s use of line and attention to the minute details always inspires me to look closer at what his thought process was. Architectural designers  think things through and make use of every detail in a way that completes a piece. These details are what gives their design, not only admiration, but timelessness.   Q. What specific item do you love most about this designer? A. I would say his beautiful Ponti vanity. I admire his pointed legs and his use of metal caps that not only made the item more functional, but how he decided to use these metal pieces to add to his aesthetic design. A. I would be curious how he lived, how his everyday outlook inspired him to make the design decisions he worked with. His use of metal with wood, and more importantly how he worked through his thought process in his day to day living.  I would also ask who inspired him.   Interviewers Note: Knowing Darren for his very high end work, I can definitely admire where his inspiration comes from. Gio Ponti has also given me a different point of view when it comes to details in design. Darren Ransdell     Our fourth interviewee is Charles D’atilli, a interior designer and owner of Zen Originals   Q. Throughout the mid 40’s till mid 60’s who was your inspirational designer? A. Easy, Quincy A. Jones Q. How did this designer inspire you to do what you do now? A. I am so inspired by the idea that nature and interior space don’t exist mutually exclusive of one another but can co-exist in perfect harmony. The idea that your living space was just a window to your surroundings is very exciting to me personally. I feel calmer when I personally live connected to nature. I try to incorporate the idea in all my design work whether its finding colors and or materials that are found in the surrounding landscape or if a house or client is not warm to the idea of bringing the outside in. I try to create outdoor spaces that are comfortable and inviting.   Q. What characteristics do you think made this designer special? A. Quincy A. Jones was one the first architects to create and incorporate green belts and green design. Long before it was fashionable.He knew the value of having a natural setting near the home. He created green belts as a way of keeping people connected to nature and encouraging wildlife to co-exist with humans in perfect harmony instead of just displacing them. He knew the greenery would keep the surrounding areas cooler and create more oxygen and create a more peaceful and grounded environment. Who else was thinking about this kind of balance (yin yang) in the 40’s and 50’s.Also the idea that there was no wasted space. The post modern movement was not just about economy (houses built inexpensively) but about no wasted space. Every space was thoughtfully designed for economy but also for maximum use. Great rooms were created for gatherings, kitchens were useful and not extravagant, bedrooms were designed for sleeping and were often cozy, (except the master bedroom) there were sunken and larger deeper bath tubs for relaxation, outdoor spaces often connected to main rooms and bedrooms. Pools were a necessity in the desert homes but also added the soothing water element to the mix. Plantings were sparse and often native. What specific item do you love most about this designer? A. As I mentioned above the green belts and green design he helped pioneer. Much healthier way of living promoting calm, ground,and tranquility.   Q. If he were alive today, What would you ask? A. Hmmmmmm, probably…, Why was there so much resistance to a design and lifestyle that connected one to nature grounded you and seemed a more healthy way of life?   Interviewers note:  Charles has been a great mentor to me. In the beginning, I never quite understood his style by intertwining nature and the home space creating harmony between the two. I now can see his point of view and inspiration. His inspiration to me is in the same way Quincy Jones inspired him Charles D’attili  Our last interviewee is Larry Cylinder, a Los Angeles Mid-Century furniture dealer and owner of Herman Schwartz Gallery   Q. Throughout the mid 40’s till mid 60’s who was your inspirational designer? A. Tough one, I can’t decide on 1,so i’m going to cheat a little and pick George Nelson, Charles and Ray Eames. Not as a designer, but having the opportunity as a dealer to be around furniture made by these revolutionary designers surely makes my job more fun and honorable to explore the different products they had to offer.   Q. What characteristics do you think made this designer special? A.  They were definitely ahead of their time. Their uniqueness process to manufacture bent plywood was unreal.   Q. What specific item do you love most about this designer? A.No doubt George Nelson’s  clocks were my favorite. But for Charles and Ray Eames I’m going to cheat again and say their lounge chairs and ottoman along with their aluminum series line of furniture.   Q. If he were alive today, What would you ask? A. How did they become interested in the design and what were they thinking when designing their iconic pieces of furniture?   Interviewers note: Larry combines his fine skills of a entrepreneur and his love for mid-century to his advantage.
