About Fort Scott, KS
Fort Scott is located on the banks of the Marmaton River in the Little Ozarks region of Southeastern Kansas. With a motto of "Simple Pleasures...Hidden Treasures," residents enjoy a high-quality of life and also access to Branson, MO, to the east and Kansas City to the north. Major employers are Mercy Health System and Cigna. The Bourbon County school district offers college preparatory and technology-focused education. The city shares its name with Fort Scott National Historic Site, an important military outpost in frontier expansion and the Mexican War and today an educational attraction. Another past-time is angling at Gunn Park along the river. Celebrating a frontier heritage, the local community college organizes a yearly rodeo. A local cultural center features the work of Gordon Parks, a famous past resident, who documented the Civil Rights movement as a photojournalist and created art as a fashion photographer.
