Exterior Residential Painting in Lakeville, MA

Summertime is prime time for exterior painting. We've been working on this residential home in Lakeville, MA for some great folks. They have treated our workers with profound respect and it has been such a pleasure working with them. The clients have asked for us to do some additional work and add/paint some shutters on their home. Hoping to get some photos of the shutters on, but for now here are a few photos of our work to date: ...read more

Common Painting Q&A

Here are some answers to the painting questions we get asked the most often - the answers you need! 1.HOW DO I DETERMINE HOW MUCH PAINT I WILL NEED TO PURCHASE BEFORE BEGINNING A JOB? Although it is best to have a little paint left over for touch-ups/nicks, paint can be expensive and home painters often purchase too much. All you need to calculate how much paint you will need is a tape measure. Measure each of the walls in the rooms that you will be painting (or the exterior) and write the numbers down. Next, measure the height of the ceiling or area that you wish to paint. For each room or exterior, calculate the circumference first (the area around the room or building by adding each wall together) and multiply it by the height. For example, if you have an area with two walls that measure 30 feet and two walls that measure 40 feet than the circumference is 140 feet. Multiply this number by the height of 8 feet and you have your square footage (1,120). When you purchase paint, take a look at the square footage on the container. For the most part, a gallon will cover 400 square feet. However, remember that most paint jobs require 2 coats. So, in this case, you would need about 6 gallons of paint and primer. 2. WHAT I SHOULD USE TO PROTECT MY CARPET FROM PAINT DRIPS AND STAINS? Many people take the cheaper route of protecting their carpet with a disposable sheet of plastic. However, the better option is to spend the extra money on a sheet of canvas. Plastic can get slippery and messy when paint drips on it and it is easy to trip over it when it bunches up during your painting job. However, canvas lays flat on the floor and soaks up paint rather than simply lets it slide around. Canvas can also stay in place around corners and in tight spaces where plastic will simply return to its original form. Best of all, you can use the canvas as many times as you like rather than just throwing it away after the job. 3. WHAT TYPE OF BRUSH SHOULD I USE FOR PAINTING AN INTERIOR? For most rooms, your best bet is to ditch the brush altogether and invest in a paint roller with an extension pole. For most rooms, the pole only needs to extend about 3 feet. However, there are poles available that can extend to as much as 18 feet. This method is much safer than using a ladder and helps to keep the paint job even over the wall and ceiling surfaces. Choose a metal pole rather than a plastic one. Also, try to find one with a non-slip grip to avoid costly slipping accidents that can be a real headache, especially when dealing with a different paint color on the ceiling than the walls. 4. HOW DO I CHOOSE A TASTEFUL PAINT COLOR FOR MY HOME OR BUSINESS EXTERIOR? You can choose a great color for your home or business exterior by considering a few elements about the property and how your paint can contribute to them. For example, if your home contains a great deal of brick that are not painting, look closely to find some of the hues in the brick and consider some of those colors. You can also consider the type of property. For example, if it is a Victorian era house, you might choose some colors that were popular in that era to add to the aesthetic appeal of your property. If you want to express a calm and collected environment, choose warm colors. On the other hand, for a bright and busy environment a brighter color might be necessary. 5. DOES PAINT EXPIRE? Yes, paint does expire eventually. The life expectancy of paint largely depends on how well you store it. Be sure to thoroughly clean the rim on the can prior to storing the paint. Cleaning the rim of the paint can will help to better form a proper seal. If there is too much paint on the rim, build up and cracking will occur which will let air into the can. When using latex paint, pour a tiny amount of water around the edge to make sure it seals properly. You can also use plastic wrap over the top of the can before securing the lid. Store the can upside down after making sure it is securely shut. Storing the can upside down can almost guarantee a tight seal. When you take paint out to complete a job, be sure to use common sense to determine whether it is still beneficial. Odds are if it still has that paint smell, it is probably still acceptable. However, if it smells stale or off, it is likely expired. You can also try painting a small amount on a surface to see how it dries before covering the whole wall. If it looks good when it dries, the paint is likely still acceptable. Learn something new? Answered one of your questions? Let us know what you think! Painting Tips 🎨

KEEPING TRACK OF PAINT COLORS Some paint colors are so close, that often times it is difficult to match your previously painted home or business with the paint at the store. If you keep track of the color in a notebook or on the paint can, there is still a risk that you will lose your note before the need of repainting your home or business. However, one of the ways that you can keep track of the paint color and type that you need is to write it on the back of a light switch panel. By doing this, you will likely discover the information while removing these covers before repainting - even if you have forgotten where you wrote it down. Many people actually go as far as to write the serial number for easy access later. USING PAINT PRIMER One of the reasons that amateur paint jobs tend to look dull or lifeless is because the painter fails to use a primer before applying the first coat of paint. Primer is one of the most important parts of the painting process. Priming helps to keep stains or imperfections from the deeper layers of the wall, which prevents them from showing through your paint. Primer helps your paint to spread evenly onto the wall without significant blisters. Priming even helps the layer of paint appear brighter, more vibrant. If you plan on painting a lighter color over a darker color, try mixing a small amount of the paint with the primer before applying it. Doing this will help to hide the underlying color. This task of mixing is only possible if your paint and primer are of the same type - latex or oil. You do not need much paint for this to work, but you should be able to tell that the primer is shifting towards the paint color. FINDING A GOOD TIME TO PAINT EXTERIORS When you decide to paint the exterior of your home or business, make sure to pay attention to the weather that day before getting set up. For the best drying times, avoid painting when the temperature is below 60 degrees F or when it exceeds 90 degrees F. In addition, avoid painting when it is raining or windy outside. The rain can dilute your paint before it has a chance to dry. Wind can blow dirt onto your fresh paint or cause it to dry far too quickly. If you can, avoid painting in direct sunlight. Not only will this make painting a much more tiresome task, it will cause other adverse effects as well. MAKING CLEAN UP EASIER Before pouring paint in your roller tray, consider lining it with aluminum foil or a plastic liner. You can throw those materials away after the paint job is complete and reduce the amount of clean up time necessary. Also, try to avoid using the side of a paintbrush when covering the corners of your room. You can increase the lifespan of your flat paint brushes and make the job cleaner by sticking to the flat side - brushing in downward strokes from the corner. If two colors are meeting in that corner, you can use masking tape on the dry surfaces to avoid splatters or bleed over. Once the other surface is dry, you can switch the tape to the other side and complete the job. If dirt or other debris gets inside the paint can while you are painting an exterior, there is no need to despair. You can cut some spare wire screen (from a screen door or window is best as it is cheaply available at your local home supply store) and place it on the top of the paint. It will not immediately sink. However, as you continue painting and the level lowers, the screen will continue to drop and take the debris with it. Once it gets to the bottom, you can simply throw the can away - but you still will have saved a great deal of paint from the garbage can. (508) 677-4482 |https://www.wmpaintinginc.com/  ...read more
