About Mount Sinai Heart Hospital

As one of the largest and most comprehensive adult and pediatric abdominal transplantation centers in the world, the Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute (RMTI) at The Mount Sinai Medical Center is committed to outstanding patient care, research, and educational programs. Our transplant services for adults and children include kidney, liver, pancreas, and intestinal organ transplant.
In addition, RMTI has one of the largest living donor programs in the United States. Through our Zweig Family Center for Living Donation, we provide the best in medical, surgical, and psychological care to living organ donors.
Support at Every Step
We bring together a distinguished team of surgeons, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to support patients with end stage disease every step of the way in the transplant process. RMTI team members view transplantation as one step in the continuum of patient care.
Our multidisciplinary approach ensures that patients benefit from the expertise of multiple specialists, who understand their unique needs.
Patients who come to RMTI also have the benefit of the fully integrated services of Mount Sinai Medical Center, a 1,171-bed, tertiary-care teaching facility acclaimed internationally for excellence in clinical care. Mount Sinai Medical Center encompasses The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Our Research Advantage
Having performed more than 5,500 liver, kidney, pancreas, and intestinal transplants over 40 years, we have a rich history of innovation and excellence in the field of organ transplantation.
One of the key factors in our success is close collaboration between our physicians and the scientists who conduct state-of-the-art research here. It enables us to provide leading-edge technologies and the most up-to-date therapies to our patients, including individuals with complex medical needs.
For example, RMTI researchers working side-by-side with our clinical teams have made great strides in increasing the eligibility of patients previously denied kidney / pancreas transplants due to medical conditions, such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV. We are also one of the few centers in the New York City region that offers pancreas transplantation as a surgical option for people with Type 1 diabetes.
RMTI Programs and Services
At RMTI, we offer a full spectrum of abdominal organ transplantation programs and services, including:
Adult Liver Transplantation
Our adult liver transplant program serves patients with all forms of liver disease. Among our many innovative treatments is adult live donor liver transplantation, which we helped pioneer.
Medical and Surgical Management of Liver Diseases
Intestinal Rehabilitation and Transplantation
Our expertise ranges from advanced nutritional management to complex reconstructive procedures, such as intestinal lengthening procedures and reversed segments, among others.
Kidney / Pancreas Transplant Program
One of our many innovations is our Paired Kidney Exchange program, which allows patients with incompatible donors to receive compatible organs through a process commonly known as a “kidney swap.”
Pediatric Liver Disease / Liver Transplantation
Our state-of-the-art liver transplant techniques include domino liver transplants, which uses one liver to save three lives, and auxiliary partial orthotopic liver transplantation.
Transplant Liaison Program
Our transplant liaisons provide community-based education on various aspects of transplantation and organ donation. They also coordinate in-services to outside medical facilities at no charge.
Contact our Transplant Liaison
To make an appointment with our transplant team, please call us at 212-659-8086 and ask to speak with a referral coordinator. Make sure you have your primary and referring MD information as well as your insurance card on hand at the time of the call.
