Laconia is the county seat of the Belknap County region of New Hampshire, known for its historic landmarks and tourism industry. Major attractions include nearby mountains and lakes, numerous antique shoppes, camping sites, fishing holes, theatre groups (Winnipesaukee Playhouse, Meredith Summer Stock Theatre), historical sites (Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society Museum, Gale Memorial Library) and the annual Motorcycle Race and Rally Week at Weirs Beach.
Each year in the winter season the Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby is held. Laconia is home to year round activities and amenities. Among the biggest companies in Laconia are Albany International, and Synertx. The biggest schools here are Lakes Region Community College, and Laconia High School.
