Just North of Hollywood, in the San Fernando Valley, 35 minutes from the Pacific Ocean, Burbank is billed "Media Capital of the World". It is home of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Laugh-In, Columbia, Warner Bros., NBC, PBS and Disney Studios. Visit the studios, theme parks, aviation history, golfing, horseback riding, Porto's Bakery at Magnolia Park with bikeway and subway. The town is named for a New Hampshire born dentist and entrepreneur who purchased Rancho Providencia in 1867. Historically a Spanish governor was unseated by the Mexican leader Pio Pico. Early manufacturing includes furniture, Moreland Motors, Jergens, and aviation spurred by WWII. Lockhead Aircraft was eclipsed by LA Municipal Airport involving notable aviation pioneers, Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes. Cinema replaced the defense industry as it's primary employer with famous films as Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart (1942), High Noon (52), Three Stooges, Mary Poppins (64), Back to the Future (85), ad Pirates of the Caribbean (03). More people work in Burbank than live there.
