Oak Ridge is a town in the northwestern region of North Carolina known for its long-standing military tradition and culture. The Oak Ridge Military Academy, established in 1852, is the third-oldest military academy in the country and resides within the town limits. As of July 2008, the population of Oak Ridge was 4,587. The town was incorporated in 1988, and since then, it has been rapidly expanding from a mostly rural community to a thriving small town with many retail shops, restaurants, businesses and housing developments. Each year on Easter weekend, the town hosts the Oak Ridge Easter Horse Show, and there are many equestrian and horse-breeding organizations in the area. Local businesses include Elizabeth's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria and OMG Dog LLC. Oak Ridge is an upscale suburb of Greensboro, its closest large city, which is also the third-largest city in North Carolina. Famous people from Oak Ridge include Grammy-nominated rocker Chris Daughtry and award-winning NASCAR racecar driver Kevin Harvick.
