HOW TO SAVE $ WHEN USING A GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Using a Graphic Designer to create your marketing materials is always a smart idea. A Graphic Designer can insure that your documents are technically print-ready, web-ready and email-ready, and that the materials created will look the best that they can as well as being as effective as possible. However, most Graphic Designers charge by the hour. Depending on your geographical area, hourly rates will differ. And the more work you create for your designer, the more you’ll pay for your project overall. Therefore, let me give you a few hints on how to save dollars on design services:  • Submit your copy in final, approved format. This will eliminate your having to use your designer as a typist. The softwares used for design are not word-processing softwares. Simple edits can take painstakingly long. So once you’ve written your copy, be sure to submit it infinal format. That means that everyone in your organization that must approve it have signed off on the copybeforeyou send it to your designer. This could save you many hours in fees! If your designer can simply flow in your copy and typeset it quickly, you save.• If you are a larger corporation, non-profit, or group organization, funnel all of the project needs through one person in your organization, andhave that one person be the sole communicator with the designer. Having a large group of folks calling the designer every day, individually, with conflicting directives, also adds many hours to your bill. •Submit your photos, logos, and other project elements inusable formats. If your photos are too low resolution, if your art is not vector format, or other elements have been created in discontinued or incompatible programs, the designer will have to fix, resize, or retype those elements. Again, more hours added to your project. Ask your designer how your files need to be set up before you send them to him/her. They will be overjoyed to help you accomplish that!• Don’t submit bits and pieces of your projects here and there over several days or weeks.Gather everything going into your piece and send it all at once.Copy, photos, artwork, etc. should go to the designer at the same time. Your designer needs to get a good idea of what will be placed on your pages before he/she can begin to come up with an overall concept. •Collect some examples.Gather pieces that you like – other brochures, sell sheets, web sites, pictures from the internet, etc. – and show them to your designer before he/she begins your layouts. This helps the designer come up with a concept that fits your pictures, and eliminates redesign sessions, which adds hours.• Communicate effectively.Call a spade a spade … don’t ask for a picture of a sleigh when you want a picture of a sled.  Don’t ask for your designer to make you a sell sheet when you want a tri-fold brochure. If you need a journal, don’t call it a program … etc. Confusion adds hours to your project. Confusing instructions will also elongate the process. Back-and-forth changes as well. • Decide on your colors up front, andshowyour designer a sample.Or, stop at their office and pick colors from a fan or chip book. If you ask for blue, there are thousands of shades of blue, so it’s best to pick out specific colors, or, bring an example that can be color-matched. For instance, teal may be described by different people as a shade of green, or a shade of blue. • Make a list of adjectives that describe the look and feel you want for your marketing pieces.Words like “whimsical,” “corporate,” “feminine,” “edgy,” or “urban” can help your designer create a concept faster than if you said “colorful,” “quiet,” or “big.” • Don’t direct the director.Once you’ve described your needs, step away and allow your designer to come up with a concept. A good designer will know exactly where to place certain elements on a page that will draw the reader’s eye to what you want the reader to see at first glance. If you micro-manage the project, and/or refuse to listen to your designer’s suggestions, you’ll both be working on the project for weeks – at a high cost to you!  • Let your designer make you look good!He/she wants to create pieces that represent you and your product or services at the utmost of effectiveness and in a contemporary fashion. If you spend time asking them to move elements around “to see how it will look,” you will add hours and hours to your fees! • Support your own deadlines. If you set a deadline for your project to be completed, you need to uphold your side of it. Make sure your designer is provided with all the resources necessary to complete your project on time. • Proof carefully.A Graphic Designer is not responsibleat allfor checking your spelling, grammar, or punctuation. That’s your job. Check it all BEFORE you submit your FINAL, APPROVED copy to your designer.  If you don’t feel you are good at grammar, spelling or punctuation, by all means ask your designer to recommend someone to do your copywriting.• Be willing to compromise. Not everything you want will be able to be done and still facilitate your deadline, font size, fold locations, margins, etc.! Don’t knit-pick the project to death – it’s too costly for you. Your designer knows what will work, both technically and visually, and what will not. If you can’t trust your designer, you should not have hired him/her!In conclusion, remember to have your ducks in a rowbeforeyou hand your project over to a Graphic Designer, as this will save you money in the long run.  Provided by Fry Creative ServicesMIDLAND PARK AND SECAUCUS, NJ201.912.4909www.frycreative.com© 2013, Danielle Fry, All Rights Reserved ...read more

Cost of Home Care in New Jersey

The Cost of Home Care in NJ How much does home care cost in New Jersey? You might be surprised to discover that the answer depends on how much risk you are comfortable taking. Home care, like all products and services can be purchased at low cost/ high risk, or high cost/ low risk, and many degrees in-between.  How much you pay will ultimately be determined on your personal tolerance for risk. Let me try to demonstrate the differences in home care costs in New Jersey and their corresponding risk factors. What are the Major Risk Factors? Health/Safety Risks New, untrained or trained but inexperienced caregivers pose substantial health and safety risks due to their inexperience / lack of training/supervision Financial Risks Can be devastatingly high to a family who does not use a caregiver who is insured with both liability and workman's comp insurance. Many people lose their homes this way, not realizing that their homeowners insurance does not cover domestic employees. How do you lower the risk factors in choosing Home Care? Ensure that the caregiver has been professionally trained and has some experience in the type of care that you require. Example: Certified training by the NJ Board of Nursing (CHHA or CNA) Example: Has worked with moderate- late stage Alzheimer clients before and has taken and passed a course by the Dementia Care Providers Association. Has taken courses in Senior Home Safety and Nutrition, and has applied these learning's with actual clients. Ensure that either you or the agency pay for and cover the employee's liability and workman's comp insurance while they are working in your home. Its also a good idea to bond them against personal loss through theft, and to ensure that either you or the agency has done thorough reference and Nationwide criminal checks. If you can afford an agency, make sure that the agency is Professionally Managed with an on-staff RN and  both procedures and staff in place 24/7 in case x, y or z happens. Caregiver calls in sick (Sends a qualified replacement) You need an answer after hours or on a weekend about a concern The caregiver comes across a situation that they are unfamiliar with (RN and Professional Manager on staff and on call 24/7) The caregiver's service is professionally reviewed for areas of development The client has a professional care plan written by an RN and reviewed and updated with the caregiver regularly to ensure that both proper and safe care are always being given. What are the costs involved in lowering the risks? You have many choices available to you, each with their own cost/risk factors that you will have to decide upon. They range from hiring an independent CHHA or CNA yourself for $14 an hour, and assuming the highest health/safety/financial risks, all the way to hiring a State Licensed Private Duty Agency who covers all of the risks, but also cost the most. See below for some examples. Care Providers                                Avg Costs                             Risk Level          Total Risk Factor Independent(You hire yourself)       Hourly ADL Care        Live-In       Health  Financial     Independent (CHHA/CNA)                    $14-$17           $100-$150         7        10                  17 Home Care Referral Agency                         Screened Independent (CHHA/CNA)     $16-$18              $130-$160      7          9                  16 Medicare Accredited Agency                          Care Not Covered by Medicare            $18-$19              N/A                 5         1                   6 Private Duty Agency (Includes Franchises)                         Privately Duty Agency (non medical)    $20-$24             $180-$225        2         1                   3 What are the major Pros and Cons for the different types of home care options? Care Providers                             Pros                                    Cons Independent (You hire yourself)       Lowest immediate cost      You are 100% liable by law. Can loose your                                                                                             home in lawsuit and have full employer                                                                                             obligations by law (avg lawsuit $250,000)                                                                                                           Home Care Referral Agency        Low cost, background and     Same as Independent (above)                                                 references checks done. Medicare Accredited Agency         All liabilities paid,               Poor quality staff, 85% fired or quit each yr.                                                   Professionally managed,     Min wage employees                                                   RN on staff                          State Licensed Private Duty Agency  All Liabilities paid,           Highest immediate cost                                                       Professionally managed,                                                       Lowest Risk for your                                                       Health and Finances           Well folks, there you have it, the costs of home care in NJ. Rest assured that we are not laying judgment here. We understand that many families can only truly afford low cost / high risk care. Our goal here is to try to educate you as the home care consumer, what your options are at the most commonly used home care services, and what are the corresponding costs and risks involved of each, so that you can make an educated decision on what you and your family are most comfortable with. Breakfast with NJ Commissioner of Health and Senior Services

by David Petroski on 09/24/10 Greetings from Montclair NJ! Joan  arrived at our home in Glen Ridge at 7:20am this morning, and after kissing my 8 year old and wife goodbye we drove off to Monroe NJ, where we had been invited to a round table breakfast with Governor Christie's newly appointed Commissioner of Health and Senior Services, Dr Alaigh. Joan, having been involved in NJ health-care and nursing  for 52 years was a little more excited than I to attend the early morning meeting with the Commissioner and other government and private sector health-care industry leaders. I just hoped to meet some new friends, and that I would be able to grab the Commissioner's ear about Senate bill 1840 before the meeting ended and she was whisked away. I must say that I was pleasantlysurprised. The Commissioner talked about her plan to help our seniors by increasing Global Options budget by $14 million dollars this year, AND allocating a whopping $11 billion dollars for NJ Senior Health Centers. Go Commissioner! Keep in mind that this expansion of much needed senior services comes at a time where the NJ State budget is being drastically cut in other departments. Dr Alaigh also spoke to us about home care in particular. She told us that the NJ government spends $64k each year per person to house medicaid recipient in a  nursing home, while they spend just $17k to keep a senior living at their own home, with the assistance of a part time home health aide. She then went on to quote a survey that found that 90% of seniors feared being relocated to a nursing home MORE THAN THEY FEARED DEATH!  It is with the above in mind that NJ's Global Options (GO) is being expanded this year. Unfortunately, even with the expansion you have to meet Medicaid income requirements to take advantage of the program. (find out moreHERE). Bottom line is the same for everyone though. Our seniors WANT to age in place at home, and it just happens that this is also much more cost efficient (home care vs nursing home) Lastly, I want to bring up Senate Bill 1840 and how its passage in the assembly will make all of our lives easier by allowing our caregivers to drive our clients around in the the caregiver's vehicle when requested, without risk of lawsuits. YIPPEE! This is a real win for seniors who no longer drive, but have been hanging on to and paying insurance on their cars. Now they can sell those cars, and cancel those costly insurance premiums!! We can drive you now! That is IF our friends in the senate bring 1840 to a positive vote. Push this with your representatives!!! We need this. I will say that when I got the Commissioners ear...this is what we talked about. She seemed genuinely interested and understood what a positive effect this bill could have on our seniors, and their ability to age in place..where they want to age...not in a nursing home. Thanks to the owner of Touching Hearts, Debbie Graulich, for prepping me for the talk on this important subject with the Commissioner. Now its in her hands to bring it to Governor Christies table. Lastly, I want to thank the seniors at the Northwest Bergen Senior Center in Midland Park. Our D.O.C. was there last week, and asked them what they would ask the good Commissioner about, if they had the chance. They gave Joan a list of 5 primary targets to work towards for NJ Seniors. We put their words in a letter to Dr Alaigh, which I hand delivered. There were some pretty big issues on their list, and am curious as to whether we will get  a response or not. Interestingly enough, their top concern was better TRANSPORTATION options. (BILL 1840?)  Well, I think I've written enough for our September blog on home care. Rest assured that New Allied Health Group, and our family of brands and caregivers are pushing hard to make your Seniors life easier at home, where they belong.. David ...read more

SaaS and Cloud Computing - The Old is New Again, Or Is It?

I am not pleased to admit that I remember the days when we moved from Mainframe to Unix and then to Network computing, but I do. The changes were all about putting control in the hands of the user by this move to more distributed computing. Gone with this move was the need to go to the IT department for even the most basic of reports. This decentralization of data control brought huge advantages in how data was mined and used. The problems morphed with distributed computing since there was so much more to manage with a pc desktop connected to the network. Desktop management costs soared and the IT department was now about ramping up a robust HelpDesk capability since the users needed lots of hand-holding with this new desktop power. The job if IT also became about locking down and managing capabilities at the desktop level in an effort to maintain a standard set of applications that would allow IT to maintain security. Then, along came the internet. This changed the picture dramatically about how and why users could access information outside of the systems their own IT departments had created. Soon, we had ASP applications that came on strong and some even survived the carnage as the bubble burst in 2000-2001. Survivors moved on and worked in their niche environments. Then comes SaaS and more explicitly, multi-tenant Saas. The distinction to the user between single and multi-tenant might well be meaningless but it impacts greatly the cost, timing and a scalability of the these "on line" offerings. Salesforce saw this opening and basically changed the way that many now view hosted CRM offerings. Now we another layer added, namely cloud computing. If SaaS is the ability to deliver an application via a browser as a "service on demand", then cloud computing is a way allowing an almost endlessly scaleable platofrm from which to deliver that service. Whether you need 1 user or 10 thousand by next Tuesday, the platform is ready and capable of handling this demand. Back to my title here; SaaS in a multi-tenant form offers an platform to deliver applications as a service where the need for classic IT Administration is minimized and perhaps. in some cases, even eliminated. Upgrades are provided to all users as after testing and new functionality is added without the dreaded upgrade cycle of typical client server applications. All of this on a pay-as-you-go service. If you need less users due to seasonal fluctuations in employees, you drop them off and then add them back in on the upside. The applications are all run from the browser and in some SaaS offerings look alot like the rich applications you are used to. So the point here is that the world is a circle. We are to some degree returning to the more centralized model of computing that we knew years ago in Mainframes and mini-computers with Unix. There are some major differences here though. First, using Salesforce as an example. The lines have greyed between what is a "configuration" and what is a "customization". The user of Salesforce can create their own views of data lists, custom reports and queries, and in-house "power users" can update data objects and fields in ways that never could occur in our past systems without major heavy lifting. What this gives us is a new way of dealing with the delivery of applications that is the best of both worlds. It is truly a "centributed" model that will give SME entities a level of power they have never known in computing power. Once the economies of scale kick in, the SaaS/Cloud Computing model will move up the coprorate ladder. I believe that the case is compelling and the future is bright for those who understand this new way of providing powerful, scaleable applications to users without many of the Admin and hosting hassles that the average company currently deals with. How about your thoughts on this?   ...read more

UNDERSTANDING AND IMPLEMENTING GREEN INITIATIVES IN PEST MANAGEMENT

In recent years the term ‘GREEN’ has become synonymous with local, national and global efforts to protect the planet from environmental degradation, and today the reality is that “green” philosophies are becoming driving forces that are modifying behaviors and actions in the US and internationally. These behavioral changes are being adopted by the entire population spectrum, from individuals to corporations and governments. management professionals are rapidly realizing the significance of adopting “green” strategies – often considered a challenge as the urgent need to eradicate pest infestations has historically involved application of pesticides using materials and methods that often conflict with the principles of environmental protection.   One of the newer environmental awareness initiatives that has entered the scene is LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, avoluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable  buildings. It represents the US Green Building Council's effort to provide a national standard for what constitutes a "green building". There are several ways that pest management practices can impact a business or buildings’ compliance with LEED approved standards, however the following summary best describes the basic premise:   In order to reduce the environmental impact of pest management activities the methods used must focus on the three ‘E’s;   Exclusion Elimination of pest harborage within a facility Elimination of food and water sources   The Pest Management Professional (PMP) needs to concentrate his/her efforts on carrying out detailed inspections, concentrating on areas of a building that are most likely to allow entry of pests and areas that provide the harborage, food and water sources needed for pest survival. The PMP, now more than ever, needs to be highly trained and familiar with pest biology and habits. The PMP should also utilize non-chemical monitoring tools that can increase the probability of capturing and identifying pests before the population builds and the infestation becomes widespread. The PMP must have the ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, with building management in order that pest prevention recommendations are effectively relayed and corrective actions described accurately and in a timely fashion. These recommendations should include reporting of sanitation issues, points of entry that can be sealed and internal structural features that can be sealed or modified to reduce breeding and harborage sites for insect or rodent pests.   Even with the most fastidious inspection techniques, pests can be introduced (for instance on deliveries and goods brought in by building occupants) and localized infestations will require some form of treatment. If an insecticide treatment is required there are three factors that will influence the environmental impact of the treatment; the location of the application, the formulation of the chemical used and the chemical active ingredient. Taking each of these individually;   1)     Location of treatment: Application of insecticides should be primarily limited to cracks and crevices used by insects for harborage. This limits surface exposure potential and also increases the probability of directly contacting the insects, rather than leaving a surface residue and hoping that the insects leave the harborage and absorb a lethal dose by walking across the material. 2)     Application formulation: There are several formulations of insecticides manufactured. For lowest environmental impact, formulations selected should contain minimal amounts of volatile organic compounds (V.O.C.) to reduce the probability of air-borne material moving away from the treated site. The application procedures used should also be done in a highly controlled and directed fashion to avoid the material drifting into non-target areas. 3)     Chemical active ingredient: Despite the controlled application techniques demanded and hence reduction in exposure potential to humans, the material used should not contain active ingredients that have an inherently high toxicity to non-target species (including humans and other mammals).   If rodent infestations should be introduced within a building, the primary control measures utilized should involve non-chemical capture techniques. The use of rodenticides inside structures is discouraged due to the lack of control over where the target rodents may die (leading to potential problems with odor and secondary infestations from carcass feeding insects). If rodenticides are deemed necessary on the exterior of a building, they must be placed in tamper resistant stations, secured in place to prevent theft or spillage. In areas that are deemed to have a high risk of exterior rodent activity, non-toxic baits can be used as activity indicators, being switched for rodenticide baits when activity is detected.   In summary; the notion of a “green” approach to pest management in buildings is more than merely a catch phrase. management companies that wish to tackle the challenges associated with protecting large, multi-purpose structures from pest infestation must be prepared to invest in hiring and training professionals that understand the relationship that exists between pest control and environmental protection. By focusing efforts on effective inspection protocols, effective communication with building management and utilizing the most up-to-date, low impact methods and materials, pest management professionals can achieve goals that are a perfect match for the goals sought by initiatives such as LEED.   ...read more

Locksmith Master Store

5.0

By Daren Richard

The pricing is great! The BEST, in fact! After some kids in the block decided that it was amusing to use my door for target practice, I had no choice but to replace the now battered door with a new one. I also needed a lock for my gate so that those pesky kids didn’t get anywhere near my property again. I expected the entire setup to cost a thousand bucks at the least, but thanks to Gary, I got the job done at a very reasonable price. There was also a coupon on their website http://www.Seattle.Neighborhood-Locksmith-Store.com that enabled me to get a 10% discount! Simply awesome!!! Do I recommend them? YES, if you live in Midland Park, NJ, I think there’s no one better that Gary from Locksmith Master Store… ...read more

Locksmith Master Store

It goes without saying, that finding the best amidst countless others can be quite a daunting task. And when it comes to locksmith services, the bitter experiences I’ve had with them are far too many to narrate. Thankfully, I stumbled upon Locksmith Master Store’s website http://www.Seattle.Neighborhood-Locksmith-Store.com around a month ago.
