Gutters are designed to transport water. When leaves, sticks and other plant debris collect in gutters they are unable to do their job efficiently. If the blockage is too severe, the resulting misdirection of water can be more harmful than not having gutters at all. There are products designed to prevent the buildup of plant debris.
In a perfect world gutters would never clog, collect debris or fail to accomplish their purpose in any way. Unfortunately, gutters do become clogged with leaf litter from surrounding trees and dirt and gravel from roofing materials; not to mention the gifts left behind by squirrels and other wildlife. Damage to the Foundation
During storms rain collects on the roofs of homes and buildings. The natural slope of most roofs forces the rain to run to the edge and then fall to the ground. This causes a concentration of water around the foundation of the structure. When too much water is present, it can seep into the foundation causing various kinds of damage including foundation cracks.
Water Damage and Erosion
When gutters become clogged with leaves the water's path of escape is blocked. The water will find a new path to travel, often concentrating the runoff into areas unprepared for it. The result can include water damage and erosion.
Fascia Damage
The fascia is a strip of wood located at the edge of the roof. If the gutters are clogged with leaves there is a good chance they will overflow, forcing the water out of the gutter and onto the fascia. An idiosyncrasy of wood is that it swells and rots with exposure to water.
Curb Appeal
