Why Cleaning Clogged Drains is Important
We have all gone to flush the toilet and found out that it is clogged and that nothing will go down it. This can be very irritating, and at times an unpleasant situation to be in. Not many people enjoy unplugging a stopped-up drain but there can be some very serious consequences if the drain is not cleaned out and left clogged.
If you leave a pipe with a clog in it for an extended period of time, there is a chance that the seals in the pipes may become weak and cause for the floor, under your cabinet, and even behind your wall to flood. There are many different things that can cause a drain to become clogged such as food in the kitchen sink, hair in the tub and toilet paper and sanitary products in the toilet. Many drains have a trap that stops objects from going completely down the pipes. If the trap is filled with items, it can cause for there to be a blockage and thus not allow water to travel down the pipes. If this occurs there are a few different strategies you can take:
- You can try to find and empty the trap yourself. In some instances this can be very easy, in others it will be more difficult.
- You can try to use the plunger to push the blockage down the pipe and thus clear up the clog. Plungers can be used in the sink, tub and the toilet. When using the plunger it is important to use forceful and controlled strokes. Being too rough can cause for the pressure to be too strong and actually cause a pipe to burst.
- Chemicals are okay to use for the smaller clogs such as a small amount of hair. The chemical products will not work on larger clogs and can be hazardous for you to breathe in for extended period of time. It is important to wear gloves if you are handling the chemicals or are trying to remove the clog after you have already added the chemicals to the water.
- If all else fails, call a plumber. They will know what to do to get the drain unplugged and may even be ale to show you some helpful hints, should it get clogged again. Some homeowners policies will cover the service fee.
