Where to Find Free Shipping Supplies

Sending a gift across the country or even across town can be quite costly.  Of course, you need to factor the price of the gift or item you are shipping, but one thing overlooked tends to be the shipping supplies.  If you have to buy boxes, tape and labels, you can spend as much money on shipping as purchasing the item.

Post Office

The first place you should visit when sending something through the mail is the United States Postal Service (USPS).  Every town across the nation has an office with representatives that will be happy to help you ship your item in the most affordable and efficient way.  The post office not only sells supplies but also have many available for free.  You can get flat rate boxes and envelopes, labels and tape at no cost.  Flat rate boxes or envelopes are usually on a display case, while labels and tape can be obtained by asking a USPS representative.

Craigslist

Check the “free” listings on Craigslist.  People give all types of items away, including shipping supplies.  Ads are updated every 15 minutes, so you will want to check frequently.  You can also place a “wanted” ad, asking for specific shipping supplies.

Shipping Companies

Go to a shipping company like FedEx or UPS and ask them to send your item to a specific location.  They will calculate the shipping and packaging fees.  Since this is all one price, you are essentially getting the shipping items for free.  You did not have to purchase them or pack your anything for shipping.

Reuse Items Shipped to You

Reusing boxes, peanuts and bubble wrap is the best way to get free shipping supplies.  Just because they were used once, doesn’t mean they can’t be used several times more.  Don’t throw away any packaging because you may need it in the future.

Newspaper

Wrapping delicate items in newspaper can be just as effective as expensive paper.  Newspapers are available at your local grocery store or kiosks around town.  You can get yesterday’s news for free and use it to wrap objects to be shipped.

Ask Others

Asking family or friends for shipping supplies is an efficient way to get what you need and help them get rid of items that may be cluttering their house.  You can also ask local retail and grocery stores to keep boxes or packaging materials for you to use.  Be sure to pick up the items in a timely fashion and be thankful for the free boxes and supplies.
