What is the Most Important Job in City Hall?

The most important job at city hall is typically the mayor. This is an elected post and one that reports to the city council and the people of her community. They keep things running smoothly and help when disaster strikes by contacting the National Guard and the President for Federal assistance. Their job is to protect and serve the interests of their city.

Students all over the United States study the role of government in our society and many are asked what is the most important job in city hall. This is a tough question to answer because many people who work in city hall believe their job is the most important in that portion of the local government.

Many would argue that the most important job at city hall belongs to the mayor. Without a mayor, a city could not function properly. A mayor makes sure other jobs get done such as trash collection, the police department and fire departments and that everyone is working together to better the city. He or she will also make important decisions on money matters for various departments like the parks and recreations department, city planning and public works departments which contain the street department among others.

Other people at city hall would each work for the mayor to help her do her job to the best of her ability. The city manager is like her assistant and makes sure the day-to-day operations are running smoothly, creates a budget for the mayor to go over and either approve or disapprove and can make personnel decisions. However, the ultimate power of the office of city hall belongs to the mayor, an elected official that does the job the people of the city want her to do.

They may also keep the governor of the state up-to-date on the plans and issues of their city and receive any visiting distinguished guests to their city. It doesn't matter if a city is large or small, they cannot operate without the mayor.
