What is Packaging Design?

Packaging design is the art of designing packaging for products that will be sold. If you look around store shelves, you will see examples of packaging design almost everywhere you look. It is a very important part of marketing a product to the public.

Packaging design is often the first opportunity a customer has to learn about the product inside the package. Important information must be on the package, information like what is included inside, how to use the product, if it is a toy, the age the toy is appropriate for would be included. Pretty anything that a customer would need to know about the product will be on the package.

In addition to providing valuable information to the consumer, those who work in packaging design must also entice the consumer to want to learn more about the product. With so many products on the market that are similar to each other, a company has to find a way to draw the customer to their product. This is often done with interesting package design. It may be bright colors or pictures on the box, or it could be an unusual shaped package. Those responsible are always looking for new ideas to draw the eye of the shopper to their product as opposed to one of the others on the shelf.

To come up with the best design for a package, research is done to find what the customer's perceptions are about the product. Developing the best design takes time and much work. Many ideas are bounced around and tested out before the one considered the best is chosen.
