What are the Different Types of Dentistry Crowns?
A dentistry crown is a dental restoration procedure that involves placing a crown, or cap, over a tooth that has been damaged by cavities or an injury. Each crown is created by a dental impression which is used to form the replacement cap. Dentistry crowns are made from many different types of materials and can be very expensive.
All-Ceramic and All-Porcelain Crowns
Pure porcelain and pure ceramic crowns are used for any crown work performed on the front teeth. They more closely resemble the color of natural teeth. These crowns work better for people with allergies to certain metals. The drawback of this type of crown is that they are so strong that they may wear down opposing teeth.
Porcelain / Metal Hybrid Crowns
Porcelain / metal hybrid crowns are good for use with the back teeth. The porcelain is laid on top of the metal part of the crown and provides the advantage of strength while still looking like natural teeth. The problem with these crowns is the metal underneath may become exposed if the gum line recedes.
Resin Crowns
Resin crowns are the cheapest type of crown. The drawback is that they don't last as long as other crowns and they are also prone to fracturing.
Metal Crowns
Metal crowns are the most durable. Metal crowns are typically put in the back teeth because the metallic color can be unattractive.
