Types of Wedding Reception Entertainment

Getting creative about what entertainment to have at your wedding reception can be a challenge when there's so many other aspects of the wedding to plan. Consider things such as the venue and guest list before making a choice, but remember the ultimate goal is to provide a memorable and fun event for everyone.

Music
The most common forms of wedding reception entertainment is music, either a live band or DJ. A band must be carefully selected and previewed in advance to make sure they are a good fit for the mood and tone of your reception. A DJ should also be seen and heard in a advance. If you are aiming for an elegant, low-key wedding, a string quartet might be the best choice. If you live near a college or university with a music program there may be student musicians available at affordable rates.

Dance
If you have musicians or a DJ, then dancing is a must. However, many people are self-conscious about their abilities on the dance floor. To get your guests out of their seats and cutting a rug, consider having a dance instructor. Whether it's instruction on swing, meringue or the latest country line dance, this will allow guests to meet each other and loosen up. 

Humor
A more unusual type of reception entertainment is a comedy routine. A magician or juggler can be hired to circulate through the crowd and perform for small groups or individuals. At key times during the celebration they can do a routine for the guests.  If you have a large number of children coming these entertainers could be a wise option. If you are aiming for a more adult affair, a comedian could be a good choice for a good time.
