Types of Travel Games for Kids

Are we there yet? If you’re traveling with children, this is a question that you will be asked at least a million times. Children don't have the same level of patience as adults and need fun activities to consume their time. If you’re traveling with kids and need something fun and exciting for them to do, here are a few things that can help.

  • Auto Tag – Each player is assigned a symbol that you will likely encounter frequently, such as a gas station or fast food restaurant logo. The player who is “it” has to find their symbol and tag one of the other players who will then have to search for their symbol.

  • Rhyme-a-Rhyme – Compile a list of at least twenty words on separate small pieces of paper. Fold these pieces up and place them into a hat. Each child picks a piece of paper from the hat and says the word out loud and all the other players have to come up with a word that rhymes with that word. The round ends once a player has repeated a word or is unable to come up with an answer.

  • The Name Game – This game has you link famous people by the letters of their name. The first player will pick someone famous and say their name, the second player then has to pick a celebrity whose first name begins with the same letter as the previous person’s last name. This game goes on until you run out of choices.

  • Buzz – Each player takes turns counting, starting with the number one. Each time a player reaches a number that is divisible by the number seven or has a seven in it, they must say “buzz” instead of the number. Even if only one person forgets to say “buzz” everyone has to start the game over. You can also use the number five to make this game easier for younger children.

  • Billboard Poetry – Take turns selecting four words from road signs. Give those same four words to the other players and they have one minute to turn those words into a four line rhyming poem.
