Types of Business Telephone Systems

A telephone system is an essential component of any business, large or small. Business owners can choose from several different types of business telephone systems to suit their needs. Choices include a key system, private branch exchange system and a voice over internet protocol system.

Key System

A key system is a telephone system that is operated manually. There are buttons for each line and in order to make or connect a call the operator must manually press the button. This is the most basic type of business telephone system and is often utilized by small businesses. Normally a key telephone system is installed and maintained by the customer. Though it is a great choice for a small business, the key system is not as popular as the other two types of business telephone systems. A key system usually has basic features such as an answering machine and caller ID.

Private Branch Exchange

A private branch exchange system, or PBX, is used by a specific business or office. Unlike the key system, a PBX automatically selects the outgoing line without the operator having to push a button. PBX phone systems connect callers internally and allow callers to dial out. This type of telephone system is excellent for medium to large businesses and usually has more features than a key system. Some features include auto dialing, call transfer and call waiting.

Voice Over Internet Protocol

The voice over Internet protocol system, also called VoIP, is excellent for any size business. A VoIP uses the Internet to carry the calls, so there is no need for a phone line. VoIp telephone systems can connect callers to other lines within the system as well as dial out. Web conferencing and video chat are often included as part of a VoIP system, making this an attractive option for many business. However, there is one drawback: if the Internet at the office goes down the phone system does as well.
