Types of Auto Assistance Memberships
In the past, auto clubs were one of the few organizations that offered roadside assistance. Now cell phone, credit card and oil companies offer roadside assistance. With so many different types of auto assistance memberships on the market, it can be difficult to choose a plan. Buy a plan that suits your needs and reduces your out-of-pocket expenses.
Auto Club Plans
Auto clubs dispatch authorized service providers to provide auto assistance to members. If a service provider is not avilalbe, the club reimburses members for their out-of-pocket expenses. AAA and Better World Club are considered full-service providers, offering battery, locksmith, towing and tire replacement services. Some auto club memberships offer additional discounts on shopping and travel. Auto club memberships typically last one year and tend to cost more than other auto plans.
Car Manufacturer Plans
Car manufacturers offer free auto assistance for a limited time on new or certified, pre-owned vehicles. These membership plans provide many of the same benefits as full-service auto clubs. The length of most plans depends on the age of the vehicle or the mileage. Some plans last for a period of months or years. Most require vehicles to be towed to a dealership for repair, which often results in higher out-of-pocket costs for parts and labor.
Add-On Plans
Some organizations allow subscribers to add auto assistance to their membership for a fee. AARP and Sam's Club contract with Road America, Signature Motor Club and other providers for roadside assistance to members. The coverage these types of add-on plans include varies widely. Some cover the driver, while other plans only cover the vehicle.
