Tips on Room Design

There are a few basic tips on room design techniques. Dream or envision your room's end result. Write all of your ideas down. Decide what you are hoping to achieve with your new design. Determine an overall theme, color or mood. When trying to bring out a focal piece or area, begin there. The final result should please you. Dare to try new things.

  1. Envision internally what you might like your room to convey. Think about the mood you want to set. Take some time to let your inner dreams create.

  2. Decide on a theme or a specific look. Do this by jotting down ideas from your envisioned room. If you want a chaise lounge, put it on the list. Think about what style you want that chaise lounge to be.

  3. Determine if the overall mood and theme are the most important aspects to your envisioned finished room. Perhaps you are more interested in displaying one piece of furniture or a particular area of a room. If so, revolve your design efforts around that focal point.

  4. Pick a place to start and begin coordinating. If you are trying to make your bed the focal point of your bedroom, choose new bedding to set it off. Then design the rest of your room around that one key piece of furniture.

  5. Use color to set tone, mood and create contrasts. Blend colors carefully. You can mix styles but you have to provide coordinating elements to achieve a polished, balanced look and feel.

  6. Get ideas from different sources. Write them down. Search the Internet or watch television for room design features. Read decorator’s tips in books or browse through home and garden variety magazines.

  7. Bring your room together. Add decorative touches with color or styles you wish to blend. Do not be hesitant to ask for help. Do not be afraid to try new things. The end result should be pleasing to you.
