The Types of Foot Surgery

Reasons for Foot Surgery

There are many reasons that someone might get surgery on their foot. Surgery is often used to treat pain in the foot that does not respond to other treatments. It is also used to correct foot deformities and treat problems that arise from medical conditions.

Pain

Surgery may be performed on the foot when the patient is experiencing pain that does not respond to other methods of treatment. This pain may be caused by a variety of conditions, from bunions to ingrown toenails.

Deformities

Surgery may be performed on the foot when there is some type of deformity, such as hammertoe. Hammertoe can be caused by genetics, weak foot muscles or wearing shoes that are too tight.

Bunions

Surgery may be performed to remove bunions, which can cause pain in the foot. If they are not treated properly, they can continue to grow and decrease the ability of the foot to function properly.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails can cause pain, redness and swelling in the infected toe. Ingrown toenails can be caused by wearing shoes that are too tight or cutting the toenail too short. This causes the toenail to grow into the toe. If the toenail becomes infected, the entire toenail may have to be removed by surgery.

Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are a result of continuous pressure from standing or walking too long. They may become very painful to walk on for some people. If they start to interfere with the ability to walk, they may need to be surgically removed.
